Morning all
Quick synopsis...
- sold all my toys 18 months ago to buy the house
- slowly adding them back in
- sorted the partner's new car last year (a Mini Countryman CS, which is surprisingly good)
- very happy with my 996 as my 'toy'
- was going to replace the Rangie this year
- popped in to the new Hatfield McL shop yesterday, drove a 570s Spider

I'm obviously now making up reasons and ways of getting in to one.
It's affordable, but I haven't got the cash to get there this year so I'd be financing.

I'm a sensible road driver, not a racer. I doubt I'd be tracking the car. I like the looks of the GT, but haven't driven one, and the 'S' felt fine for road use and the Spider is getting some seriously good reviews (on here as well as with the press).
A GT+S Pack is basically Spider money. I'm not that interested in carbon packs. I'm not that into convertibles, so it feels like an 'S' is the right entry point (cheaper too).

I guess the question is one for the owners, and apologies if this has been done to death. What does it take to run one?
I'm used to running a 911 and a FFRR, so running costs aren't too scary, but it would be good to go in with eyes open.

Thanks in advance
Rich

The best thing about any convertible (for me) is the increased feeling of speed and enjoyment at lower speed.

Spider is 3 cars in 1 with no compromise due to McLarens fantastic carbon tub. Can't beat open top motoring IMHO and only reason not to go down that route would be if you are a hardcore track guy where the extra 40Kg and fixed roof maybe better.

Whichever you choose running costs are pretty much the same so all in allow circa £3k pa for years 1-3 and you should be ok

Spider does give you best of all worlds without the compromise as RamboLambo indicated. Got the option to get the rear window down and enjoy the exhaust noise without having to put full roof down.

Quite a few nearly new around at moment and due to timing off year they came out have all pretty much stuck - i have been watching the market and only 2 used (maybe 3) have sold on trader since early dec and number of cars been there for 2/3 mths now. might be able to get a bit of a deal maybe?

happy hunting and i am sure you won't regret it.

I just collected a 6mth old 540c yesterday and just cannot wait for some dry roads and decent weather.

Interesting thoughts, thanks for the responses.
3k a year is old 911 money, so no bother there.

Helpful insight into the used market. Nice things are expensive, I don't mind paying for toys, but I'd rather not take a bath if I don't have to.

Feels like I need to drive a GT to understand the difference on the road. Then it may be a case of seeing what comes up first at the right price.

If you are talking about running costs then a new 570s will be under warranty for the first 3 years and unlimited miles. Servicing is around £750pa. Tyres are around £200 a corner and mpg is 20's when pushing it and way over 30mpg on the m-way and I know owners who can get 40mpg at 70mpg. I had a 996C2 and it was quite cheap to run until I needed to spend £6k in one go! I sold it after 7 years and bought a 12C. I can honselty say I have noticed no difference in running costs, in fact 12C has been cheaper for first 2 years as it had a warranty. I just had to extend the warranty and obviously that costs but otherwise running costs are very low. High MPG and insurance is cheaper than my RS4.
