Hi,

I've owned a 540c for a year now and it's a superb machine, but I've just got a strange issue with my windows opening on their own. At any random time, often in the middle of the night, one of the windows will go down on it's own, which then triggers off the alarm, which then also triggers off the tracker people, who then phone me and tell me "intruder alert".

This happens on either window, and the windows open by different amounts each time, varying from a couple of mm to 4 inches so far.

I then go to the car, press the key fob, open the door, shut it, the window then goes up again as usual, and then I wait until the next time it does this.

I've given the car to McLaren Birmingham who are waiting for the fault to occur on their premises so they can then work out what to do to fix it. It's that frustrating thing of being random so no idea when it's going to happen. The thing is, I can't really carry on and drive it because I can't leave it anywhere in case the window opens, and then either something could get into the window, burglar, rain etc. Has anyone got any idea's on this at all as McLaren Birmingham aren't sure at the moment?

Cheers, Alex

Hi,

I had this on the 2016 540C. One would drop a bit if the car was left for a while. It was related to the battery discharging. When the battery loses all power the last thing that happens is both windows drop. I think this is to do with relieving pressure on the doors in prep for manual opening with the emergency key.
Unfortunately I have had that happen in pouring rain.

I would get the battery and its connections checked.

Good luck

Thanks but the battery being wrong isn't straightforward as McLaren Birmingham pointed out to me. They told me that if the battery goes dead then both windows should open together to the same amount. But in my case, my windows have been going down one at a time, each window at different times, and different distances each time. On top of that, my battery on many of those occasions has been plugged into the conditioner so should have been 100% charged.

Regarding the door catches, I'm not sure about that either. The door catches were replaced a few weeks ago on my car, along with the "touch lock switch" apparently.

What's helpful is that the problem happened again over the weekend whilst in McLaren Birmingham's workshop, and I was called by Tracker again saying intruder alert. McLaren Birmingham called me this morning when they opened, to say that the drivers window has gone down about 5mm and that they are now looking at it again. I hope they can find something in the next day or two...

Thats helpful that the problem occurred at the garage.

Hope you get it sorted quickly.

Yes, mine are the soft close catches. They have already replaced them though on mine so it may be something else. What's for sure is that it seems that several people have got this issue so they will have to work out what's happening!

I've tried to drop you a mail, I might be able to help.

No, they couldn't work it out so they have now contacted McLaren HQ - in Wokingham I guess, and have been doing tests apparently but it's still not solved yet. They've had it about 3 weeks now and I'm missing driving my machine!!

I’m having exactly the same issue with my 720.
Only had the car for c6 weeks and the alarm goes off randomly, the window occasionally drops and the tracker company call. Happened 5 times in the last week. The car was connected to the trickle charger all that time.
I’ll be watching this thread and hopefully you’ll get yours sorted and they’ll diagnose the fault for others! Good luck!

I had the same fault after soft close was fitted to my 12c spider, apparently it was due to the latches not being a matched pair ? Driver side was changed to match passenger side and it has been perfect since.

OK, that's all very helpful to know.

Well, after a couple of alarms a week ago, this time the computer created error logs/codes so they could see what was happening. They've now changed both of my door window regulators which apparently were both faulty. They had already changed both door latches and also the "touch sensitive lock switch" which hadn't solved the problem. Fingers crossed that the regulators are the culprit.

I'll post again after I've had the car back. I hope this is useful info, particularly for you 720 owners!

I hope its sorted now. Sounds like they had no idea what the fault was and changed parts for the sake of it. Now they tell you BOTH regulators were faulty. Really? I suspect it was a fault in one of them, but then trial and error repairs mean you will never know. Every GT has soft-close doors, and I am sure the parts are the same. This is the first time I've heard of the problem.

Did the window regulators solve the issue? I have exactly the same issue on my 4 week old 570gt. I work away and the wife is going nuts with the alarm going off randomly. I’ve had her try turning off the interior motion alarm on the door buttons - this didn’t stop it. I’ve now asked her to leave the centre storage armrest up as I read in the manual that this turns off the alarm. Hacked off with the dealer as no response to my email in 2 weeks. Not a good customer service experience so far. Car is in the garage connected to trickle charger with the front boot fully closed. Car is locked.
Anyone got any ideas on how My wife can silence the thing until I get home?
