Mines got the sport exhaust, shine a torch down the end of the pipe and you can see the valves.
Ted, many thanks for indulging me on this, I'm trying to understand what the sports exhaust looks like, the first image below is labelled a sports exhaust and there is clearly no valve on it but the one posted by Techo has valves and I found another pic of one for sale in Oz (below) being sold as Sports exhaust which also clearly has the valves, it seems there may be more than one version.... Have to say if those valves are closed it sends everything through the back of the muffler then out of the small tubes at the front - it must be really quiet, even quieter than the standard fit exhaust which has an element of straight through with no valves, see third pic below.

Mine is the middle picture, I can't see the point of the layout in the first picture, the gasses wouldn't enter the silencer box, just pass straight out.

They do this on the standard box also (bottom pic) it has a balancing effect, probably takes out some resonance

This looks an interesting aftermarket option, appears to follow the design of the factory sport design but made of titanium for the same price as the the factory option ~£4750

Anyone have any experience/heard of this outfit ?

I always do that. As mentioned both my cars have Larini Clubsport exhausts.

I will admit they have probably ruined it sonically for just about every other car on the road. Very little gets close to their sound IMO.

Unfortunately McLarens especially do not compare. I've driven factory sports exhaust and MSO exhaust models and they still didn't do it for me.

Shame.
I stuck this here from another thread as it's quite relevant.

I found out recently that both the factory and sports exhaust for the 720 are valved for the Euro markets (for noise regs) so they are pretty boring with valves shut which seems to be most of the time in daily driving, the US versions do not have this valving and are better but I agree they really need something more dramatic.

I specced my 720 with the non sport version for this reason so I can spend the £5K on something a bit more exciting. So far the aftermarket choices for a cat back exhaust are

Fabspeed - un silenced "LT style"
AWE - cross pipe unsilenced
Velocity AP - cross pipe unsilenced
Unobtainium - Ti straight through
Fi Exhaust - valved, mufflers and cross pipe
RES - as above, a copy of the sport exhaust but in Ti
Manhart - appear to be a copy of the sport ex
Quicksilver - unsilenced straight through with balance pipes
Capristo - quite an elaborate silenced and valved system
Thorney - straight through with balance pipe
Larini - straight through with balnce pipe/s
Kline - mufflers, valves and cross pipes and inconel

With our Euro cars one has to make sure the factory valve has been taken into account and is allowed to work even if it is not in the exhaust stream as it interfaces with the electronics and I'm told if the ECUs can't see it flapping then error codes are thrown.

Any experience of the above would be welcome ?

Interesting I thought my exhaust sounded like it had a valve in it, working similarly to my F430 (so comes on plenty during day to day driving). And when I say exhaust sound I mean induction sound within the cabin. I don't care what everyone else hears outside!

Your original question biggrin

I think Quicksilver sell an electronic box plug in which is connected to the cable which plugs into the valve motors and keeps the ECU happy, maybe that could be used but then does that leave your valves open or closed, presumably you could manually move the valve actuator to the open position and fix it there leaving the electronics to do their thing in keeping the ECU happy and no CELs.

TBH if you are going through the rigmarole and labour costs of doing the above you may as well buy one of the aftermarket exhausts, the Larini is under £2K...

I went for the Quicksilver in the end, came with a nice white Ceramic coat took my Porsche guys about 6 or 7 hours to fit.

First impressions are good, I find my ears have got more sensitive as I've become an OG and with this being a DD I didn't want it loud unless pressing on so far seems good but I'll give it 2 weeks and see how I feel. Certainly sounds very aggressive on cold start now with no valves to quieten it down.

Whilst this forum seems to be mainly about people concerned with money, for those who are actually driving their 720 I thought I's give a follow up on the Quicksilver exhaust.

To recap the Euro cars' exhausts all have valves fitted which seem to remain closed for most of the time which means even the sports version is pretty quiet most of the time and the standard fit version is very quiet until you give it WOT and at higher revs where it sounds fine.

The Quicksilver fits after the cats and has no mufflers on it bit uses a couple of crossover balancer pipes to iron out droning and combine the two banks of the V8

I am daily driving this car which involves a fair bit of town driving, I didn't want something too loud and "look at me" I was after an exhaust which gave the engine a bit more character but didn't drone or become tiresome in any way.

So 1000 miles in and I am totally happy with this exhaust, in the mornings it sounds great properly barks as the car starts up and then settles when warm to give a lovely low level thrum which matches the throbby nature of the engine perfectly. With the windows down it sounds awesome, not stupid loud but more what you would expect from a car which looks like this. When cruising at part throttle there is zero drone and it is completely tolerable (for me who has relatively sensitive ears).

So for anyone who who bought a car with standard exhaust or is looking at a second hand 720 with standard exhaust I can recommend this system and for those watching the pennies biggrin its pretty cheap costing about £3200 fully fitted.

On initial start up the sound is ok but soon drops, anybody looked into keeping the valve open ?
Very good question and one I have an answer for. So it turns out that if you ever go to a Pure McLaren track day, the cars they have there actually have their exhaust valves permanently open. They literally tie back the valves or something similar so the car still thinks it's all working and doesn't come up with error messages.

I've been quoted £500 to get it done which includes having it UNDONE when you sell the car.

But that's too cheap for me............................... biggrin

So I'm looking at the Novitec Race Exhaust which I've been quoted:

Stainless steel one is £12,000 + VAT and the inconel (F1 material) is £18,000 + VAT. That’s just for the system.
As someone already put up earlier, it sounds RIDICULOUS:

But it makes TB993tt's Quicksilver exhaust seem like an absolute bargain - love to see a video of it in action....

I know someone who is currently running a group buy on Quicksilver exhausts, offering 20% off for any club or such like who can get 10 orders together.

May be worth looking into if a few people are being tempted by the Quicksilver systems.
