After hiding in the background on here and reading everything I can about McLaren cars I finally test drove 1 this week (a 12 month old 570S with buckets and track pack).

Having owned lots of semi exotic cars over the years I must say that as a road car the Macca blew me away.

I have always preferred the looks of the 12C above the more recent models and have just secured a stunning Graphite Grey (2012 with swipe doors) this morning from a reputable dealer in Wetherby, West Yorkshire.

The car has an unusual history having been exported from new to Hong Kong (it is full UK spec and RHD) where the owner refused to pay the import tax on the car so it was never registered there.

She was only ever driven to the McLaren dealers and back for servicing!

Fast forward to early 2017 and the owner shipped the car back to the UK where all taxes etc were paid and the car was UK registered with only 600 miles on the clock and full McLaren HK service history!

Once back in the UK, the car was inspected by McLaren Manchester in February 2017 (mileage recorded as 724 miles) and a number of items were replaced / updated (common faults such as rear lights etc) at a cost of £3,910 according to the invoice provided.

She was also put through a McLaren Warranty inspection and they confirmed that the car would be issued with a full extended manufacturer’s warranty subject to paying the annual fee.

I have purchased the car on the basis that the full McLaren Warranty is placed on the car and McLaren Manchester will be again do the warranty inspection (and charge for this again!) even though the car has only covered 27 miles since the last inspection.

The car really is in time warp condition but there are a couple of very minor points of concern:

She still wears her original Pirelli P Zero tyres and although these are as new, they are date stamped week 39 of 2011. Will these be checked as part of the warranty inspection and do they have a lifespan as I have previously had to replace Porsche tyres when they reach 5 years old?

There is some corrosion on the windscreen wiper arm under the black paint, is this covered under the warranty?

I also noticed some slight oxidisation of the paint around the driver’s side rear quarter glass and again will this be fixed under the warranty?

She is pretty much my perfect spec (subtle colour and tan interior which looks MUCH better in the flesh than in pics) with the exception of no interior carbon. The owner has specced loads of external carbon so I find this a little odd. Can the aluminium interior be upgraded to C/F and is this very expensive?

Spec wise she has:
List price £168,500.00
Graphite Grey paint £1,700.00
Tan leather £1,830.00
Branded floor mats £300.00
Papaya Cilipers £850.00
C/F front splitter £2,130.00
C/F rear diffuser £2,980.00
C/F engine panels £2,980.00
C/F engine cover £2,130.00
Stealth pack £770.00
Sport exhaust £4,040.00
Lightweight sport wheels £2,980.00
TPMS £640.00
Full leather interior £3,400.00
C/F sill panels £2,130.00
IRIS + Meridian sound system £5,100.00
F+R parking sensors £1,530.00
First aid kit + warning triangle £170.00

So a £204k purchase for the original owner!

Apologies for the long post but am a little excited.

I should pick the car up in a week or so after she has been to McLaren Manchester.

£4000 bill on a car that has only done 700miles!

Heavens above what it will be when it’s done 70000!

To be fair the cost was broken down as:

£1,098 labour to do the Warranty inspection,
£1,000 labour to replace both rear light units,
£446 for the new rear light units,
£764 for new water pump (replaced as a precaution due to low miles),

The rest was service consumables!

McLaren insisted that all of the above was done before they would put their extended warranty on the car.

You definitely need new tyres. I've had a few cars that had old tyres on and even with plenty of tread, the handling was awful. One in particular was so unpredictable I stopped overtaking slower cars until I was able to change the tyres.

You really don't want 7 year old tyres on a 600 bhp car!

There is another thread discussing why McLaren's scare used buyers off, why they depreciate and that there are some things McLaren needs to address.

I'd say this is a good example!

Unless I'm reading that wrong, £1k for two light units fitted is pretty good value. I was quoted £1450 for one headlight for my V8 Vantage, supply only.

Congrats OP! What a great find!

You are reading it wrong. The light units were £446. £1k fitting is insane.

Paint around rear quarter glass was an issue on the earlier cars and you will find almost all 2011/early 2012 cars were repainted to fix that paint oxidizing issue but as that car wasn't used and probably not seriously looked at when/if serviced that wasn't picked up. Not entirely sure the extended warranty will cover it now but it certainly was under the original manufacturer warranty. I'd also ask to double check the front wings while you're at it given those had some corrosion issues too.

Can't remember if the windscreen wiper was covered but I don't think it's an expensive part iirc. And I'd never drive on tyres that old btw. Fwiw I think a car that's practically unused is a bit of a risk, especially on the 12c where cars that had been used more regularly ime have tended to be the ones with less issues. Good luck anyway and with the warranty hopefully most things are covered.

P.S double check the coolant hoses haven't cracked or such as they have been known to come loose and if I remember the exact wording of the extended warranty I don't think they are covered although usually for 'known' faults so far Mclaren have covered them afaik.

P.P.S I hope you've driven a 12c before as it's a bit different from the 570...

I would love to see what ferrari or lamborghini would charge. I expect it will be very similar in total, if not more.

And what kind of bellend makes a "look how much it cost to drive 700 miles" joke when the inspection and replacements were made due age, not usage.

You don't think it was slightly tongue in cheek?

£1k labour charge to fit 2 lights is nigh on robbery. If Ferrari et al charge the same it doesn't make it right does it?

I've had a sports exhaust put on my LP-560 Spyder for less labour. Admittedly that was at a specialist (Grimaldi Engineering) rather than a dealer.

My Super Trofeo Exhaust for my SL2 was fitted by a main Lamborghini Dealer for less than a Grand in labour, which involved significant dismantling of the back end, more than that required to replace lights I would have thought, although I don’t know what is involved tbf.

Outrageous charges and exactly what puts me off, when I start musing about a Mclaren. Then again, not suprising really. No independents to speak of and the dealer network is small, so I guess they can command whatever price they want.

I wouldn't drive a daily rustbucket on old tyres let alone a 600bhp supercar. You must change them asap, it's a safety issue more than anything else.

I don't know what Mac recommend but Ferrari recommend changing tyres if four years old. I agree with the other posters who recommend changing them asap.

I will negotiate new tyres in to the deal and will probably go for Corsa's over the standard P-Zeros.

Does anyone have any experience of McLaren Manchester (they have already seen the car last year and it has done only 27 miles since) and McLaren Leeds as I live a little nearer to the Leeds dealership than the Manchester one.

Thanks for all the comments!

I'd personally very strongly advise staying with the Pzeros. You cannot get the new model Pirelli corsa in MC spec 235 front (well you could try to shoehorn in the 720 245 front as I think it probably fits) and the old corsa tyre is imo an awful tyre, poor in the wet and dry on track. If you are not absolutely constrained to stay with MC spec Pirellis, changing to the Michelin PS4S would be the best bet.
