What do these usually involve?

I've just received mine, but it was very brief - just over a minute long. I now know the tread depth on each tyre (although only on the middle groove), that there are no oil leaks, and that apparently there is no play in the front suspension components.

I was expecting it to be a bit more in depth - especially regarding consumables that won't be covered by warranty. The car has only done just over 7k miles - but although I would know how to check steel discs, I have no idea how to check carbon ceramics - and since I assumed the video would cover it, I didn't even try to see the pads.

I was expecting the video to confirm that I was unlikely to have any unexpected expenses in the near future, but it doesn't seem to have told me anything - other than tyre depth which is the one thing I had checked!

Seems about right - pretty much what I've had no matter what car is being serviced - from VW Up to 911 ! I work on the basis that if there isn't much to the video, then the car is pretty much good to go and there's nothing to worry about.

With regards to the carbon ceramics, I believe there is a test you can do on them, but to be perfectly honest, the biggest issue with them is being stone chipped. If that was the case, then Mclaren would have replaced the disc (probably as a pair) before you pick up the car. I have PCCB's on my 911 and they are epic, so I can only imagine that those on the 650 are another level up.

Mine (from McLaren Manchester) have been more than that (the last one was 3:28 minutes)

4 tyres (full width inside, middle and outside)
Pads and disks
Any stone chips
Underbody scuffs
Wheel damage (or not)

I got pretty much the same from Mercedes on Thursday.

That's more the sort of thing I expected. I've asked for a better one, and have been told it will be arranged.

Why don't you just go and have a look Dave. You're spending a lot of money, surely that's fair?

I just posted about my McLaren Glasgow experience.

Speak to the service manager about your concerns and ask if you can pop in and to speak to the guys about your car that performed the healthcheck/inspection...i did that yesterday and had a great informative blether with the workshop guys all telling me all about my car.

The healthcheck video is more to show up any issues with the car so i would take it as a positive.

I will PM you a link to my recent health check video, rather than post publicly on here (it has my details in it).

The car isn't on site now - I went this morning. But I've been told a new video will be made on Monday.

My understanding was these videos are to show any issues, not show everything that's ok. Unless it's a full walkthrough if you are buying remotely?

When are you hoping to pick it up?

If I were to have my time again buying the 720, I would insist on a detailed pre-delivery video. There's a lot going on hidden by the undertrays. Get them to drop the undertrays and show an inspection of the engine etc. The video I just emailed to you was to do with the engine consuming 2 litres of oil over 6K miles. There wasn't a leak and nor was it burning the oil. To cut a long story short, a vacuum was causing oil to be retained at the top of the engine, not allowing all of it to flow back to the oil tank, from which the measurement of oil is taken (its a dry sump engine). McLaren Bristol has changed the cam covers under warranty and it appears to have solved the issue. They also spotted a slight water leak and have fixed it. Well done McBristol.

"health check" is probably not the correct description.

Did you also get a hard copy checklist? Mine included a statement that the CCBs were in good condition, the 3 readings per tire, brake pad measurements, etc.

When i went in for a craik with the guys that worked on my car they told me as my ceramic discs were as smooth as glass they are in perfect health...they showed another car that was in and the ceramics discs were very rough on the surface; that indicates that they are shot and will eat pads.

The discs on the front of the 650 are about £6.5k a set....so when you are told the cost to replace all 4 discs and pads it would be one of them 'man landing on the moon' moments...you would remember it for the rest of your life.

To be fair though, no different than any other high end car with ceramics.

Yup...that all was documented and should be part of the healthcheck.

The video will be short if there are no problems. Different dealerships probably also vary in detail/length.

Mine was 2mins 24 secs, and all clear btw. Nicely detailed. (McHatfield)
