Over the last year i have read countless inputs to help my decision on extending the warranty on my 650 when it turns 4 in October or to cross my fingers and self fund if anything goes wrong.

As long as i have the car inspected at least 3 weeks before currently warranty expires there is no inspection charge.

The car went in for a service earlier this week and i had told them that i have had a intermittent airbrake issue but no other issues as it seems to be an absolute peach of a car...indeed Lee at McLaren Glasgow placed it as a 4k mile car instead of 28k miles!

Upon inspection it was discovered a very small oil leak at the top of the engine that is small enough they couldn't detect its origin, and also a leaking hydraulic damper.

All 3 issues are covered under the warranty, with the strut being the only known cost at around £3+k alone. The engine oil leak will be a indepth investigation most likely more labour intensive than cost of parts. Both of these issues were insignificant enough to let me on my way and booked in for the warranty work in around 4 weeks time as that's when it suits me to take in the inspection visit also.

It has left me in no doubt that the warranty cost of £3700 ish is a no- brainer and £70 a week if you break it down that way.

Other posters may jump in and say that's a ridiculous price, but just like Davek and others, i have been hit with bills twice that value in a single year on previous Ferraris, so i ultimately am happy with the fact i have total piece of mind.

Fair enough that Thorney may be £900 cheaper for his warranty but irrelevant to myself as he is 550 miles away.

If my car did not have a McLaren warranty already in place i would have to rectify all of the above issues myself which could easily turn into £5k and then the inspection and warranty costs on top.

Advice from an owner is, if buying a McLaren, especially a super series, don't buy one without the McLaren warranty in place.

Just because a car is far cheaper to buy as it has no McLaren warranty it could well fall into the saying 'buy cheap pay twice'.

Hopefully this helps any other owners potential owners that's got the same dilemma.

Can't fault your logic, I think you are making the right choice.

Same logic as me. I'll be renewing the warranty on mine when due. Worth it for the peace of mind

I looked at a 12c a while back and was very tempted but what put me off was the cost of the warranty, as per mile I couldn’t make it add up. (I would probably only do 1k a year if that) I guess that is the thing with more modern cars that there seems to be more complicated things to go wrong and when they do they are expensive! I have just extended the warranty on M5 and agree that it does make you not worry about any noise you hear and just enjoy the car.
