Murcielago Maintainance without the Lambo Tax

Contributions please , from anyone who can inform/educate us about how to maintain the Lamborghini Murcielago PROPERLY , without necessarily /automatically getting brand new parts from the factory .
This will become ever more pertinent as more and more parts become unavailable from the factory... as is the case now with the Countach .
So , for example , a list of Audi/VW interchangeable parts , companies that can rebuild starter motors and solenoids , refurbish shock absorbers .
Maybe also a list of preventative maintainance things that one can do ..... eg Resso has suggested a heat shield to protect the starter motor .
I,ll start with :
Starter Motor :
Symptoms ..... a clicking noise only on turning the ignition key . Once every 4 turns , the car would start up normally , and then run perfectly well , but on the remaining 3 attempts , only a clicking sound .
Forums and mechanics suggested the following might be at fault ... starter motor , immobiliser circuit , battery , earthing fault .
Some mechanics also said that replacing the starter motor was an engine out job .
David at Pangbourne diagnosed the fault to the starter motor , and replaced it with a Lambo factory unit without having to remove the engine .
I did ask about refurbishing the original ..... but we did not know anyone who could do it reliably , and time was short .
Pangbourne returned the original starter motor , and I can confirm that it is a Bosch unit .
I would like to rebuild this original unit , so Reeso , please could you tell us who rebuilt your old one , and also who made up the heat shield for your new starter motor
Battery :
Various Official Lambo Dealers said that I would need to get an official Lambo battery as a replacement .... and the cost was about £800 .
Pangbourne did not have an official Lambo battery in stock , and neither did the factory , and sourced a replacement for £186 , which they fitted for free ( involves taking off the wheel , the wheel arch liner , and then it’s an awkward reach deep in to access the battery terminals )

I spent a good while trying to find some aftermarket rear discs for a late 6.2 Murcielago (with the brake upgrade). For the earlier Murci’s Tar-Ox are probably the best choice, but they don’t make the 355mm rear brake.
As far as I can tell, Girodisc is your only option (part A2-097). At £1200 a pair they’re between £500 and £1,000 cheaper than Lamborghini. Slotted not drilled but they are well made and do the job. Difficult to buy in the UK but Sumo Power can get hold of them.

Here’s how to do the front shock absorbers. I do t know anyone who has actually done this in the UK, but i’ll be first if mine fail...

If your starter motor is failing on attempts to start....i.e it takes 2/3/4 going to actually start then the chances are the internals are fried due to the heat under the bonnet.
As stated above, it is a Bosh unit, but the serial numbers lead down blind allies, as you get too far down the VW/Audi parts list and then it goes blank. Bosh couldn't help either apparently! Getting them rebuilt is better than half price of a new Lambo one!
I used a motor factor company local to me, but any descent local garage to yourselves should be able to recommend someone who do theirs on normal cars. Just try to re frame from telling them what car its for ;-)
Heat shielding.....A great Mechanic friend of mine sorted it. Ordered the good heat shielding material from Demon Tweeks thats soft as opposed to rigid. Then simply wrap it around the starter motor and tie off/securer in place. Not had an issue for 3 years what so ever.
Hand brake pads for an LP640 (NON Ceramic) are the same as the ones used in AP Racing h/brake calipers. A set are £72 vs the Lambo ones at £450 - bargain.
Rear brake pad warning sensors on an LP640 (NON Ceramic) are the same as used on the Audi SQ5 - £20 each. (i'm guessing the fronts would also be the same if required).
Front & Rear brake pads can be replaced with a variety of options which are cheaper and way better than OEM. I went for Brembo HP Sport 2000. Much better and at £425 all in for front & rear sets, way cheaper too.

I have had my Diablo front shocks refurbished, and I think the Murci is similar. There are two custom made rings, but the rest are standard parts. I used someone recommended on a Lambo WhatsApp group:http://www.lamboweb.com/Repairs_Section/All_Repair...

I think he can arrange for the custom rings to be made. I sourced mine from the US (email at jcuster2@woh.rr.com) and they shipped direct to Black Art Designs. Cost from Black Art was £150 per shock including shipping back. Cost of rings was $300 for 4, including shipping from US.

Mine is the original one from delivery in 2004 and hasn’t been touched since. It did suffer from slower turning of the V12 a few years ago but this wasn’t the motor it was a corroded earth strap.
Gentlemen check your earth straps.. mine was replaced for £60 and it spins like new.
By the way it’s just hit 275,000 miles and it going like a train. Here it is nearing the artic circle in Norway this summer

Gentlemen check your earth straps.. mine was replaced for £60 and it spins like new.
