To keep you up to date with the massive new road building that’s happening in the U.K..............???
I live in small-town Cheshire and they have built 3500 new houses and more than doubled the population in 10 years. Every one of the last 2500 houses built is on a new road. The nav in my car can't find any of them. No, there aren't any new motorways but there are literally thousands of new roads in the UK because there are hundreds of thousands of new houses being built. It's meant to be an amusing comment I know but it's also wildly inaccurate.
170,000 new homes built last. Many of those two bed flats.

So what's your contention? With 170,000 new homes built EACH YEAR there have clearly been thousands of new roads built in the past 5 years. Are you arguing differently?

satnav won’t update.
OP doesn’t want a phone holder on the dash or windscreen.

With the exception of an A to Z which is bulkier and less Convenient than a phone, how else do
You fulfil the request without a lacky band holding a phone to a vent? You could wedge the phone into a gap in the steering whee(if it fits)

You could buy a car with an updatable satnav
You could keep your mclaren for track days where satnav is unnecessary.
If you want to drive a car with no satnav to a location you’re not familiar with, AND don’t want a holder attached to the screen or dash, what other options are there?

I’m all ears
I think you misinterpreted the aim of my post there! I was having a go at McLaren, not your suggestions - bemoaning the fact we even need to consider suggestions like yours when spending big money on a "state of the art supercar".

I think McLaren as a technology company should have better offer for a satnav. Now a TomTom for 100 € has more features than the Iris II when it comes to GPS and maps.

Anyone who know the latest map version # for EU?

The system should allow the user to download latest maps over the internet. Could technically be done via the cars usb port connected to the internet shared mobile. 100 € / year is ok.

Keep the customer happy. Next time he might order a Artura....

I know that there was a map update earlier this year - at least in the UK. I will have mine updated when my car is serviced in a few months.

That upgrade is at extra cost. Seems that Parrot really did a solution that looked great, but is very complicated to maintain.

Sparparts / maintain pricing is from another planet.

Since its Android based I hope someone hacks the unit/s and develop a very easy info/navi solution.

No it isn't - at least not for me. I was told I'd get it done for free next time my car is serviced.

(which is actually better than many competitors who do charge you for map updates).

I recently worked for a gent who does small production vehicle electronic systems, he works with some very high end manufacturers and has been trying to get into Mclaren for years, ive seen some of his systems as have probably a lot of you and they are so much better than the parrot/iris junk and he is UK based.

I have spoken to him about unlocking the Iris which he could do easily with a bit of testing, i wonder how much demand there would be if it was available?

My 570s is currently in for a service so i will enquire about software updates and any costs and report back, although i guess it may differ dealer to dealer.

Pretty sure I know who you mean (as an ex Aston owner)

The iris II look and feels great. But, parts are jokingly expensive and upgrades are cumbersome.

OTA upgrades and a 90% reduction in parts price would make the solution on par with normal vendors policy.

14k USD for a 100 $ touchscreen. The vendor must have only profit in his mind...

Yes, it a small number of units produced, but Woking had their choice.

I'm curious who these "normal vendors" are.

A constant complaint of inbuilt sat nav is that it quickly goes out of date - in all cars. Who are these car manufacturers who are providing regular OTA updates for their maps free of charge on a regular basis?

Heard about Toyota, BMW, Mercedes, Volvo, Hyundai and Koenigsegg?

Iris can technically do this via wifi. It would need, a ftp module with memory enough to hold the map data.

But, since it still intellectual propetery of Parrot it seems far reached. 3rd party developer could do this quite easy.

You are comparing apples with oranges - volume manufacturers for average cars vs small specialist supercars.

How does McLaren compare with Ferrari or Lamborghini for their infotainment cost / updates?

If I wanted the simplicity and running costs of a Toyota, I'd have bought a Toyota.

My wife’s mercedes has a great app that lets you do all sorts of things remotely from locking it or telling you if you’ve parked up with the sunroof or windows open, to tracking the car’s geolocation, to setting the car in “valet” mode so that it temporarily restricts the engine meaning a third party can’t Rev the crap out of your car, to updating the infotainment system and the latest navigation maps…

A lot of supercars could do well to learn from the more mainstream manufacturers.

I am not comparing apples with oranges. McLaren has bought this from Parrot. A giant in car infotainment systems. They did a poor spec what they wanted from Parrot and got in return a hilarious pricing and a system with no upgrade path.

Sorry to say Ferrari and others has same way of thinking.

Since infotainment is a part of everday life for the average driver vendors should have a more open approach to this.

Competition is fierce, customers decide where to put their money.

Mclaren has a valet mode too, but none of the other stuff, personally i wouldnt want to much or it just becomes gimmicky like Tesla stuff, once the novelty wares off you wont use it.

Update on Iris map updates, my 2017 570s in currently in for service and according to the dealer the iris software is up to date, so no updates available!

Guildford told me that there was an update available a couple of months ago - in fact, they'd literally received it earlier that day. I'd hope that the maps update would be common across models, but I suppose it might not be - Iris is clearly different between 540 / 570 and 12C / 650 so maybe the update I was told about was only for the older / super series cars.

Can’t agree with your gimmick comment at all. If the functionality is there you can choose not use it if you feel that way.

Software updates from comfort of my own home (literally 10 minutes job) versus PITA of getting car booked in and then the logistics of car to dealership and back… have to say they’d be no novelty issues for me. Also 2 button clicks on smartphone tells you exactly if your car software is up to date versus getting misinformation on forums or different dealerships, depending on how knowledgeable or not the person you speak to happens to be.

Mclaren valet option is so difficult and fiddly to engage / disengage, I don’t know anyone that uses it, I certainly haven’t… messing around with the in car steering wheel stalk endlessly scrolling through options versus literally 2 smartphone button presses. Again I’m in favour of technology enlightenment on this one.

I have used valet mode a couple of times, its really not that hard, granted not as easy as yours but hardly a chore you suggest and if thats much of an issue you dont use it, i doubt your very serious about the function.

However, i do totally see your point, it could be easier and more functional, although i am really not that bothered about loads more, it would be nice though to be able to update maps and even use outside apps (i.e waze/torque pro/harrys lap timer) on the system, that in my opinion is the only gripe, but have to it locked is just mad as the software is already there!
