Amazing job.
mentioning the PPF of the Rear valance - is now(ish) the best time to PPF, if you give a little longer to harden the paint ?
(II know nothing about PPF application, but surely access etc has to be easier and quicker ?
Best to let the solvents evaporate and for the paint to cure fully before applying PPF. The rear diffuser is easily removed to apply PPF.

Mac 720s. How long will you have to wait before PPF? Looks fab.
I’ve been told to give it 4 weeks to allow the solvents to properly evaporate and for the paint to properly cure. The car will be garaged and then dropped off for PPF.
They told me this too. I then waited 3 months before applying PPF being OCD and recently under the PPF in some small patches it looks like the paint has sunk. I'm confident that if PPF was taken off and the paint doesn't lift that it will flat and polish out but my concern is the PPF replacement cost and if when the PPF comes off all the new paint comes off. We shall see in a few years after PPF worn out but I feel I made an error.

Nice work there. And an interesting glimpse into the sophistication and complexity that lies beneath the surface of a 720S. thumbup

A bold choice - but the more pictures I see the more I think this will look brilliant.

This might be a stupid question, but in addition to PPF will you get any kind of paint 'correction' done before the PPF goes on?

I can appreciate this job is on a totally different level to a factory line process, but I wonder if once the paint settles etc. whether any (minor) imperfections would be present and if you'd need to give it a little extra TLC via an in-depth paint 'correction' detail?

Yes, definitely will have paint correction once it has had time to settle.

I'm beginning to think your car will be ready before mine - and mine went to the paint shop on 2nd March!

On the plus side, everything had been painted by the start of April, just before they went into lockdown so regarding PPF my paint has already been curing for 2 months

Hi Mac,
Are the key fob your current ones? How has he managed to get them painted? And with McLaren logo?

I wanted to have mine painted either McLaren Orange or MSO Helios Orange (my car colour).

I like the nice touch of McLaren logo, they look like ones bought from McLaren.

Sorry for focusing on key fob, what can I say, it's all stunning and looking forward to the final result!

I’ve only seen the two photo’s, not in the flesh. I may pop in to see the car tomorrow so will ask how he painted the fob and will report back. Cheers.

Yes, they were the standard palladium colour plastic covers. Will need to get some PPF on them.

Agree but not sure if you can get them ppfd as the McLaren logo is protruded.

I have a painted ppf'd mac key the logo doesn't protrude enough to prevent the ppf sticking down around it fine.

One of the best threads on here.

Hats off to you Mac720, to not just have ability, but also the balls to execute such a bold project.

I think the end result will be unique and stunning.

Mick it really is stunning, next time you go up North to visit (once the paint is fully dry & ppf on etc ) , lets try to arrange a meeting Yorkshire way as I really want to see this in the Flesh so to speak. smile

Update: There is a lot of dust on the car, but this is what nine layers of paint looks like - the high gloss finish is bonkers. It still needs to have some minor defects removed, and then a final polish. The front bumper and bonnet will be added tomorrow.

Videos are shot in 4K.

It's been months since I posted anything on PH but had to come on here and take my hat off to you sir!

What a fantastic project. I'm an ex-McL owner myself and love a project like this! Did toy with getting my 12C done in Amethyst black but this is simply next level!

We obviously have similar tastes as I've also colour changed my E46 M3 to something very close to that XK-RS you showed, but I went for historic Porsche Arrow blue.

Well done x1000
