720S vs Pista vs SV.

The second and third both own by Phil - Morethancars.

Just amazed, don't think atm anything beat a McLaren performance wise in the supercar territory.
And at todays price, it's perhaps the best supercar you can buy?

Also design wise, I mean, Pista doesn't look as good as 720S, although 4 yrs old?

They seem similarly matched for quite a while, then it's like the 720 is in a different league - I assume the 720 didn't suddenly get much faster, so I assume the Pista acceleration drops off quite a bit quicker than the 720 at speed.

Either that or the 720 has a whole new level of turbo lag wink

The thing is, it was a standard, older 'red tick' 720 that was up against the SV and Pista versions and it was still quicker...a more relevant comparison would would be using a 765LT when available.

The numberplate on SV suited the car just perfectly...crass and just terrible; not entirely sure which was worse tbf.

The noise of that Lambo’ though, heavenly.

Loving the colour on the Pista too.

Ferrari colour on the Lambo’ for me laugh

Just shows how advanced the 720s, other than a hypercar nothing can really get close.

By the way there is no performance difference between the earlier red tick 720s and the later ones.

In fact other than that cosmetic tweek no difference at all, although the conspiracy theorists somehow think McLaren turned on a magic quality improvement tap in middle of 2018.

I’ve gone from red to silver tick. There is a difference to software. I think it was mid-2018 when the silver tick was introduced with the later software levels. The earlier models cannot be updated to the latest software. The latest software removed the hot-start function and I can feel gear changes are more aggressive in sports and track. There is a real difference in downshifts when in track mode - more pops and farts - very loud. I think there was some changes to the Cam Covers to help with oil distribution.

Traction, as soon as it hooks up it just fks off.

You can see it step out more than once in the footage.

Looked like it was >100mph when the 720S lifted her skirts and left them, seems too high a speed to be a traction issue, my money's on the McLaren having an aero advantage.

The 720S has immense mid-range. Watch any shoot-out with a 4wd and they get off the line quicker, but once they hit 100mph, it’s goodbye.

Never had a go with a 720 but if its anything like 675 the mid range is immense.

Runway event SV gets off the line quicker but then by about 100 mac comes back at it quite strongly but then by 150 the SV starts to pull on it again. Buy 200 there is a big gap between them. Obviously not something you are going to see on the road. Would have been interesting to see what happened if they kept going dual clutch is worth a lot up until big speeds

Nothing to do with turbo lag. All about the traction at launch. Wonder which tyres they were on.

Of course, the AWD Lambo gets off the line first but suffers with that single clutch gearbox and extra weght.

Anyway, a drag race has not much to to do with “performance”. My daily driver Tesla would have leave all of these behind for the first 10 Sec, and it certainly is not a performance car.

Yes it was the traction. After the launch where the gap appears, the 720 maintained the gap- meaning it was actually accelerating faster than the Pista, because the Pista was already at a higher velocity. And then it moved ahead as it could clearly maintain the acceleration through the higher gears.

In drag races, you only catch up once you are accelerating significantly faster if you are left behind at the start, as the leading car is already going faster.

Doesn’t the Pista come with stickier tyres as standard? Probably a factor in the braking results as well.

Wrt power though, Thorney did lots of test on the dyno and proven that 720S run the expected power, I suspect it’s the driveline and aero efficiency that give an advantage to McLaren.

Most tests of Mc 720s mention the phenomenal power it generates above 80-100mph but that it doesn’t get off the line as quick as some.

This is complete boll@@, the 720s with a decent driver using launch control and with warm
Trofeo’s will get off the line as quick as anything stock and very able to get under 10 secs for the qtr. Over the 1/2 mile you are going to require a Hypercar to even get close

No other Supercar is even close but a McLaren is also quick on track which is more than can be said for any Lamborghini. Actually the only Supercar remotely able is the Pista Piloti and the GT2 RS

The 765LT will just annihilate the opposition but as everyone who has driven Supercars will testify the 720s is more Stallion like than the Italians Mare !!

Why Pista Piloti?

Piloti is just a trim variant of the Pista, technically is still a Pista.

And I mean, the same Pista on the video above lol.
