I've been following this thread since it started. I was very very close to buying a McLaren, and after a lot of reading and hearing reports about corrosion, electrical issues, and dealership woes, I chose not to buy one.
I love your car and its colour etc, but I am so glad I backed off, just at the right time. It was so tempting.
I very much appreciate your thread as its given me a very open and honest insight into your own ownership experience, to date.
Keep posting please, as I'd love to hear more about your car in the future.
Thankyou.
I honestly think you’re missing out on one of the best if not the best driving experiences you can have..........( and some other stuff)I love your car and its colour etc, but I am so glad I backed off, just at the right time. It was so tempting.

I want a very reliable car that I can use all year round, and also use it for foreign travel / touring. To that end, I moved my sights to other brands and I found precisely what I was looking for.
This.....

Its fully loaded with all sorts of technology, goes like stink, very comfortable, and sounds fantastic. Even my wife loves it !!

To be fair, not many people know how quick they are, but times arent everything, its about how the car feels to you and if it suits, if you like muscle cars then the gtr is more that, i respect the 720s precision and i suspect its far less tiring doing laps, wasnt to my taste though, thats all.

The 720 and most McLaren’s however would leave a GTR for dust on any track, including the Ring. McLaren have never officially ran a 720 at the ring. If they did, ie pro-driver, race team support etc, not just a lap on a TF day, it’s a sun 7min car for sure.

720s arent that different in my experience, owners are always surprised maybe i underestimate the hp increase.. but ok, i’m not that bothered really, we’re both getting an exhilarating drive so win win eh, incredible cars
FWIW, I have a V12 Vantage (manual super GT) and a 650. Totally different from each other. Ultimately it’s no contest from a driving experience perspective, not the least because of forward visibility and lighter weight mid-engine nimbleness. And then there’s the carbon fiber tub, the dihedral doors, the active aero, the brilliant suspension, the folding hardtop. Would never replace it with a super GT myself.

Quite, horses for courses, love our GT cars but have no intention of going anywhere near a track with them, the GTR in stage 2 is whole different car and in no way a GT probably even less so than the 720 with its awesome suspension tbh, it punches well above its perceived performance and i love that, a sledge hammer compared to the 720 for sure but does have a ‘puny god’ attitude to it 720 is a very clever car, just a little anodyne for me when i tested it, i guess i’m more of a thug when it comes to my track car, refinement and ease of use for our GT cars.
OP - A lovely write up
I strongly considered a deep burgundy 650 coupe a couple of years ago but rightly or wrongly was put off by internet scaremongering and went the Merc AMG way, though like you I hankered after a convertible so traded my AMG GTS coupe for a GTC cab in Nov last year. More of a sledgehammer than a scalpel but damned good fun. A friend of mine is just finalising purchase of a 65o spider so it will be good to get the 2 alongside and compare.
Be good to know what you decided to do in the end and if you kept the 720, yours being one of the nicest colours I've seen - they really do suit certain silvers as they show the lines of the car off so well.

Hey all, sorry for the lack of updates, new job has resulted in a lot less time to spend in the internet!!
Still have the 720, now put on just over 10,000 miles and has been relatively trouble free, just some glass issues that were quickly sorted by Mclaren Manchester (who have been brilliant by the way!) and a parking sensor fault which its going in to have done in a few weeks.
Even after a year the car still amazes with it's acceleration and overall performance. I've joined a local supercar club that's a lot of fun with some really great people in it (MKNN Supercar Club) If in some pretty special company the 720 gets a lot of positive comments and attention (not including the McLaren reliability banter )
I've actually added a couple of cars to the stable since my last update, I've bought an SL63 for daily duties and just a few weeks ago, bought a manual 355 Spider (that I'm really enjoying!), so hoping with a couple of other cars to sit alongside the 720 and Exige the mileage gets spread about a bit and I don't put another 10,000 miles on it this year! It's also great to have such a good spread of cars, really makes you appreciate what each one is good at. As an out and out petrolhead, I'm feeling so lucky right now, dreaded getting into my 40's, turns out I'm living my best life!
Invite to Supercarfest again and some runs down the runway:

I've now definitely decided I'm jealous. Both of your expanding car collection but also of your wife who actually allows you to get away with that frivolity Still have the 720, now put on just over 10,000 miles and has been relatively trouble free, just some glass issues that were quickly sorted by Mclaren Manchester (who have been brilliant by the way!) and a parking sensor fault which its going in to have done in a few weeks.

You take the MKNN anti McLaren banter well Mark, I just tend to ignore it.
In any event none of them from the club wanted to come and track on what was a glorious day on the GP circuit at Silverstone. They actually missed a great day.
None of them Porsche GT things including a couple of 2RS’s could overtake my unreliable, corroded, broken down 720s though
In all seriousness though, the 720s is essentially a road car but on a fast one off lap or two on track they are monumental, which Porsche, Ferrari and Lambos can only dream of.

Bit of a long overdue update! And quite a twist……
After just under 2.5yrs of ownership and 12,000 miles, the 720 is gone!! Part exchanged it last weekend…….. for this!! ??
It’s been the best 2 yrs of car ownership with the 720 and the original plan was to change to a spider, but I couldn’t find the one I wanted, some man maths later and made a 765LT work!
I will put up another thread on this car when I have some spare time, but if anyone wants to see more pictures and videos (There are plenty) I’ll be putting stuff up on my instagram account.

This thread highlights how difficult it is to estimate real colour in photos.
I saw your car put up for sale at part-ex price a couple of weeks ago. I was very tempted, but in the photos it looked quite dark grey and I didn't think I could live with that.
However - going back to the start of this thread, the car looks much lighter, and I really like it. Enough so that I even said this!
