Bought a 720s! My 1st "supercar" Wish me luck!!
Discussion
Weather forecast looked good for Sunday just gone, so with an early start being less painful with the clocks going back, hit the road about 6am to meet a couple of friends for an early morning drive. The forecast may have been good, but the rain from the Saturday made for some really wet roads. In my Exige, that would really have put a dampener on things, but in the 720 I still really enjoyed it. Obviously took things a little more cautiously, yet even with the P-Zeros it still felt very composed and stable, giving me the confidence to push on a little. It did send me a little reminder part way through the morning though! Heading up a slip road to join the A46, put my foot down a little too much and the car quickly stepped out, bit of a heart in mouth moment but the electronics kept me out of a ditch. So it was the straight road where it tried to kill me, not the twisty muddy, bumpy, twisty B-roads we spent most of our time on!
3hrs later we arrived out our usual end point at Rutland Water, lovely cafe over looking the reservoir. Car was so dirty, never had it like that in my ownership. The various intakes all caked in mud, leaves and various debris, looked like we'd been off road:
My friend turned up in a lovely looking and even better sounding Corvette! He managed to stay on the road too! Anyone looking for one of these, it's for sale
Got home about 6 hours later and couldn't bear to put the car away like that, so spent the next couple of hours with the jetwash and some snowfoam, got into all the nooks and crannies, rinse with some filtered water and a blow dry, then tucked away for next weekends drive out.
And the customary wings up picture.......
So the buzz isn't subsiding with this car yet. Even just talking about the drive out and looking at the pictures as I post them on here, gives me the butterflies, I just love it so much. 40+ cars I've owned over the years and none of them have had this impact on me. I know it sounds sad, but honestly, I've never been like this before, I'm not so crazy weirdo Anyone thinking of doing this, just do it, if you're a real petrolhead, you can't not love these cars! And the positive attention you get in them just adds to the enjoyment. 2 short test drives in bright red Ferraris and I was given abuse on both, 6 weeks of driving this car and I've had nothing but positive comments. Even pulling up at lights I've had people roll down their windows to tell me how good the car looks.
If Mclaren can mature and improve the used car ownership experience, help enable independent support, help to keep residuals up, these cars will end up being so sort after.

I get it completely My 720S is the best car I've ever owned. I LOVE it.
I still get excited looking at it 2.5 years later.

It’s not the first time I have posted on PH my thoughts of 720S versus 650S. Chris Harris states that the 720S is the best supercar at the moment, but he has the driving skills to wring its neck and take it to a level that a mere mortal like me cannot. I don’t have the driving skills to properly compare the 650S with the 720S, but I do know that within UK road driving constraints, the smile-o-factor for both cars will be similar.
Don’t get me wrong, the 720S is a marvellous machine, but is it really that much more convincing than a 650S? 720S design is radical, but the 650S with its P1’esque front isn’t a pig.
I started to appreciate the 650S when I attended a MOC UK weekend jaunt around Wales last year. There was a chap named Neil with his Mantis Green 650S. I followed him most of the time, admiring the car and how it sounded.
We missed you on the Northumberland trip a few weeks ago, hope the move went well. Still loving my car, I’ve now done over 9000 miles in the 2+ years that I’ve owned it and thoroughly enjoyed every one of those. I would change to a 720 Spider but not at £100k cost to change. It’s hard to see a better value super car than a 650 at £100k ish. I still smile every time the air brake fills the rear view mirror??

Mac, don't want to get you into bother, but have you seen this spider at McLaren Manchester?
Deposit £120,000...
I know that the finance question has been argued to death, but who’s going to put that much down as a deposit, knowing that in all likelihood that’s money gone.
It just seems (to me) to emphasize just how much extra depreciation you get when you choose liberally from the options list.
This car will be what, £150,000 at best in three years?

I saw that when I went to look at mine, it is absolutely stunning in person, photo's don't do it justice.
A LOT of money though with huge depreciation potential. Not many people out there would be willing to lose 100's of 1000's on a car, in what, 18months?
Stunning but who in their right mind will pay that for a 720S when you can get a 765LT for less.A LOT of money though with huge depreciation potential. Not many people out there would be willing to lose 100's of 1000's on a car, in what, 18months?
Says it all that the GFV in 2 years is £170k although that said due to the rarity of 720S spider in general and that one off spec I think the residual is cautious but then again in this market who knows. 720S coupes were plagued with lots of issues but are now selling like hot cakes as they really are VFM. Just too many of them made combined with all the other factors has killed values but people buying now wont see anywhere like the levels of depreciation from new so quite an astute buy IMHO and what a car for the money

Many 720s have had no issues unless you know different !!Says it all that the GFV in 2 years is £170k although that said due to the rarity of 720S spider in general and that one off spec I think the residual is cautious but then again in this market who knows. 720S coupes were plagued with lots of issues but are now selling like hot cakes as they really are VFM. I always wonder why dealers put up the top list RRP price and even the poor APR at times. Just to scare the punters off!
I guess its instructed from manufacturer to try and get it a level playing field??
But as you all know its all superficial and dealers are always played off each other...
That is ridiculously nice though!! a 765lt spider in that spec would be Mclaren perfection for me!

Just had a nice and unexpected parcel turn up from McLaren Manchester. Really nice touch. That (was) my reg number so it’s personalised too. I think touches like this are great and a positive indication that McLaren are on the right path. Bear in mind, this was a used car I bought, not a new one. This is in addition to the nice bottle of champagne, expensive candle, large GTechnic cleaning kit, McLaren umbrella, mug, cap etc etc I’ve already been given. I’d definitely have no concerns buying from McManchester in the future....
