Post on the McLaren FB group tonight from Thorney saying that McLaren are now refusing to supply all third parties with parts.

Pretty outrageous if true…..text…

“ We have been informed today that McLaren Automotive have instructed all of their UK dealers to cut off the supply of parts to us and any other third party.

Thats right, they have told dealers if a dealer sells us, or anyone else, parts for their Mclaren they will close the dealership down.

We'd be interested to hear from anyone who might be able to help fight this decision which if left unchallenged would mean the end of us and anyone else with a business looking after Mclaren owners.”

As ye sow, so shall ye reap.

If this is true then McLaren will go bust as residuals will collapse on older cars due to maintenance costs which will then cause buyers to stay away from newer cars, creating a vicious circle which leads to dwindling sales volumes and ultimately, bankruptcy.

It's a bit of shame that they've chosen to do this.

I am sorry, this is an insane position.

I have done some consulting in the auto space before and aftermarket supply is CRITICAL to brand longevity.

Utterly stupid

Are they stopping Dealers from selling parts to owners?

Take car to an independent garage.
Garage gives owner a shopping list.
Owner buys from maclaren and gives to independent to fit.

I'm not sure how their position fits with block exemption laws.

Just when you think things might be improving with McLaren they pull this (assuming it's true of course) ...Having indy specialists that give owners an option away from main dealers is crucial especially with the older cars. Early 12c's are now 10 yrs old which means you can no longer get the extended warranty on them so an indy is your only choice...who would run a 12c if you have nowhere to get a warranty from? Crazy decision...Porsche, Ferrari have plenty of reputable Indys and it has probably enhanced their overall business rather than taken from it.

Yeah just saw this on the FB page just as my confidence was building a little I've been thinking of getting a 570 but nope not after seeing this.

Is it even legal?

Is this desperation to keep everything within the dealer networks? Dealers should be able to compete with indies by having better access to training and better parts discounts they shouldn't need to force people out. Stupid decision if true the cars are a bad enough risk without putting more barriers in the way.

Could it just be a short term supply issue and they're just prioritising the dealers until supply returns to normal?

+1 after spending some time with a 570GT I'd seriously started to do some man maths but this attitude makes it a non-starter for me.

Will be following with interest.

I don’t read the statement as McLaren refusing to supply independents outright. It read as though authorised dealers aren’t allowed to resell parts to indies, but I’ll bet indies can still buy parts direct from McLaren.

Preventing grey market reselling isn’t unusual.

Or short term parts supply issues so prioritising franchised dealers.

Would pose an interesting anti-competitive behaviour question wouldn't it?

Pretty sure it’s illegal but who will spend the cash to challenge it?

Looking forward to a McLaren statement…..
