Hey all,

Just after some ideas and thoughts. I’m looking for a supercar which I can use as a semi-daily. I have a 360 and LP700, but I find both of these seem quite fragile and just not that usable everyday for pottering around town. I also have a M5 and S63 so don’t really want another saloon. 2 seat or 2+2 is what I’m after. I’m torn between:

- Porsche Turbo /S (991) - probably closest thing as a ‘daily supercar’

- Porsche GT3 (991) - how are these for a daily?

- Porsche 993 Turbo - can these be used as a daily?

- Ferrari California - is this more of a daily than other Ferrari’s? I like the 2+2 for the kids at the back and the hardtop convertible

- Ferrari 599/F12 - how do these compare to the Aventador as a ‘daily driver’?

- Mercedes AMG GT

Not driven any of the above and will take some for a test drive once I’ve narrowed it down somewhat.

Thanks!

Only two of those are supercars, both Ferrari’s.

I’d add to the list McLaren 570, 12C and 650S.

A 911 would make a good daily sports car, as would an R8.

911 turbos are good daily, but I found mine extremely dull.

I would expect the 993 turbo to be a bit less suitable as a daily although probably a bit more exciting.

I'll echo the McLaren comments. I bought my 650 as a semi daily and it does the job very well. Put it in auto mode, suspension and engine in normal and your gran could drive it to the shops, especially with winter mode on.
But drive it properly, and it is everything you'd expect. It really is a very good daily supercar.

I used my V10 R8 as a daily for about the first 6 months of ownership and it was fine. Doesn't attract too much attention but is still an occasion when you fire that V10 up.

Same here - it's my main car (mrs uses the Yeti most of the time).

I'll echo the 911 comment. I had one and whilst it was surgical in operation - faultless, it just felt rather soulless. I am not for one second saying they are not brilliant cars, and I suspect any of the GT models are a bit special - but I've never driven one.

PH User. You really have a chip on your shoulder about the R8 don’t you.
What’s wrong, can’t you afford one? Did your wife run off with an R8 owner.
I’ve seen at least two occasions where your insistent that the R8 is only a “Sports car”. Come on what’s your problem?
If it looks like a Supercar, drives like a Supercar and sounds like a Supercar then what is it?
Got to say I love my R8 V8 Supercar.

R8 isn’t a Supercar.

Do love them and will get one sooner rather than later, but I’d never tell anyone it was a Supercar.

It absolutely is.

https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/audi/r8

I mean honestly, you have THE same engine from the later Gallardos, and the Hurrican, same soundtrack, a mostly hand built car, incredible performance and handling. Heck, mine is 585 Bhp (more than the equivalent Gallardo) and the R-tronic is the gear box straight out of earlier Lambos - the E-gear in the Gallardo. The engine was famously detuned to avoid upsetting Lambo owners. It's an Audi-Lamborghini, A Lambo with much less dramatic styling. For me, it's a Lambo without the image problem - I'd own one happily in a city, but here in the Sout West I'd be the one Lambo around other than the occasional appearance by Peter Andre!

I'm assuming the "it's not a supercar" comes down to:

- Not expensive enough to maintain
- Not expensive enough used
- Not impractical for every day use
- Not unreliable
- Not terrifying to leave parked at Sainsburys.

None of the above "make" a supercar, but an aweful lot of people seem to , perhaps subconciously, put them on the list.

Honestly? I just think those that have spent £200k on a red car just look down on the likes of me who spent £45k to have just the same driving experience, albeit with a hugely different ownership and image experience.

I wouldn’t bite when this guys posts stuff like the below.

If a z4 is an occasion to sit in, an R8 will feel like a euro fighter rofl

Ooh I've got a stalker, what fun.

The problem is with what you've tried to quote is you haven't read what I wrote properly, or taken into account the context that it was in.

An R8 isn't a super car IMO, it's a sports car. If it bothers you that your car isn't a super car then that's your problem and not mine.

Its kind of part and parcel for a supercar to be impractical, it sort of helps make up what defines a supercar.

From your list, its arguable there is only 2 supercars listed. Even Porsche define their 911T as a "sports car", supercar performance, 110% but there is just too many out there and today there is something from the marque on every road. This is similar to the Merc as well as say an R8, super cars but fall just short of that "supercar" status.

To anyone that want to pretend they are by all means carry on, every one has their own perception but personally when there is a combination of loads made and a Porsche, Merc or Audi badge slapped on the front it falls short of that status.

A 911 T is probably the most usable everyday sports car out there.

A true supercar does need something like McLaren, Lamborghini or Ferrari printed on the front. 570, 12C, GT, Hurracan, Roma(?), 488 with comfort options are probably as close to as practical/everyday as you will get. Are any of them as good as a 911T when it solely comes down to practicality/everyday use, probably not.

And that just confirms what I posted. (You forgot Koenegseegggggggg). It's the price, not the badge that bothers you. R8's are just too cheap. Even though under the hood they are basically a modern Lambo. Far far too "common" to be a supercar :-) Wrong badge.

In fact "supercars" became far too cheap and common a while back, and the world created.. "hypercars".

It's great mind you. It's great for the enlightened ones of us out there that can see through the badge and snag what is an absolute bargain.

There are plenty of brands I left out, I don't see how that warrants being brought up? At the same time nothing "bothers" me, I'm answering the thread, although something clearly has you bothered to pick out something that is not in my post.

No, its not to do with just price, my post highlights that certain brands are common. If its too common, its not a "supercar". 12C''s are cheaper than a R8's. No matter what others say, that's how I perceive things, if that's not agreeable by you then that's your issue. We all have different kinks in life and what is one mans crap is another's treasure.

For reference I own a 911T. Good value, definitely, but its not in the same league as a real supercar.

Pretends they are a Supercar. What a special case you are.
I’ve had a 911, Corvette C6, Z4 3.0se, SLK 230 kompressor. These were all sports cars.
I am not as special as you. I don’t pretend. So the badge is what makes a Supercar then?
Ok let’s start with Jaguar XJ220 then BMW Z8, Alfa 8c, Mercedes’ SLR or SLS, Corvette ZR1.
Not one a Supercar in your view.

Does any of this actually matter?! Who cares if most people don't think your R8 is a supercar.

The BMW Z8 is definitely not a Super Car....? It was intended to be a modern classic retro touring...! I did have the pleasure of owning one for quite a while and did exactly that, but not a Super Car.

"most do" actually. A quick google:

Auto Express, "The Audi R8 is a true supercar that's devastatingly fast, yet it's as easy to drive as a TT. The Audi R8 is a supercar from a dying breed. ... But, while the 5.2-litre V10 is a focal point of the car, there's much more to the R8 than simply a big engine."

Drive tribe: "AUDI R8: THE PERFECT FIRST SUPERCAR
The R8 is the only supercar you should buy if it's your first time, here's why."

Top Gear, "Audi still makes a naturally-aspirated, fire-spitting mid-engined V10 supercar... that itself makes a really, really good noise."

Robb Report, "First Drive: Audi’s 2020 R8 V10 Performance Is a Supercar That Doubles as a Daily Driver"

Car and driver, "With Lambo underpinnings and a rip-roaring V-10 engine hidden beneath its understated body, the 2022 Audi R8 supercar flies below the radar"

I could go on. There are countless examples.

I'm not sure any owner cares what you think about it's supercar status. What is worth arguing is when those that either have a Fezza, Lambo etc dismiss the (often faster) Audi due to badge snobbery, or , those that don't have one and won't ever buy anything of any interest throw their "Clarkson-inspired" opinion in. FYI - he said he'll never own one bacause he'd rather spend £60 more on a Lambo as it's more visceral.

It's all a bit predictable really.
