fun little fact - I am trying to get a car "unchipped" and it turns out, you need a new engine management module from McL, no other way to remove the "chip" according to them - c. 4k (Euros).

It's just a software patch surely? McLaren might be doing their typical thing of "problem with X, the only option is to replace it" and in this case X just happens to be the engine management module. Or perhaps their dealerships simply have no mechanism to apply a map, so they are offering the only thing they can do. You'd imagine at least some of the tuning places would keep the original settings just for reference purposes though.

I would have thought so too, but I am dependent on McLaren - agreed with the selling dealer that we go half half (even though my contract clearly states, was tuned in the past - aka not anymore). He did the usual dealer thing, other people are calling about it etc and my response was, well it needs a service and I am already paying for that (or not as it may be, but that is not the point ....). Whatever, I just need to get the car on the road before summer is over, otherwise it was a pointless purchase.

I feel your pain. As the customer you can walk away, but in reality walking away means probably not getting a 650 before the end of the summer, which itself will be worth a large amount of money. The unfortunate reality of a sellers market.

Frustrating. I would agree that if you want this, ironically a tuning company is probably a better bet than McLaren, since the former must have a process for applying new settings to a chip, whereas McLaren may purchase the chip pre-programmed from eg Bosch and plug it in. Litchfield have chipped Macs in the past, and have a good rep for being technically capable of going deeper than most, maybe worth a call?

The other question is, why? If you believe that the tune is a good one with no impact on driveability or reliability, then why not keep it as is? If you don't, then I'd have thought perhaps better to give this car a miss and wait for a standard one, disappointing and frustrating as that is with so few cars on the market.

The stty AI description on that car screams a dealer who will do the absolute minimum amount of work possible.
You want a hundred and ten grand for the car, turn off chatGPT and take 10 minutes to write a proper f-ing description.

It doesn’t pass the sniff test does it. The trader, location, photos, description and car seems suspect. I’m pretty certain Thorney wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole.

Dealer description on autotrader says they have "20 years of experience in buying and selling prestige, luxury and performance vehicles", except their AT dealer page shows just 5 ratings from customers (in 20 years?), and exactly one review posted one month ago, which itself feels very impersonal and generic. They have no website, google shows nothing about them, and the location shows an area of Bolton where, let's just say, you wouldn't expect to find a Supercar dealer. They have had the car up for over a month and they have just three photos, all showing just one side of the car, and none of the interior.

"barge" and "pole" spring to mind.

Fresh listing on AT for £125K, but URL suggests it was previously listed 08/10/2025.

This was up for sale for a while at £110k and was then removed. If they can’t sell it at £110k, then they ain’t going to get £125k.

The ad is awful too. Everything about the dealer and nothing about the car.
