Just to add to this thread Dan from 12k fitted Apple Car play to my 650s and it is superb. Works really well wirelessly and looks like a factory fit. I highly recommend it.

I've got my car back from Mclaren..but the dealer is on the hook for a new unit (IRIS 2) when they come back in stock. It is just too good a car to dump. The problem that they have is that so much of this tech is built in small batches and probably had parts from Russia or Ukraine in it...As such McLaren have confirmed IRIS 2 units will come in but it will just take longer to source. I know that it isn't an excuse but their area manager was in at Guildford when I picked my car up and he was pretty open and ultimately helpful. It doesn't solve anything in the short term but.. you need the IRIS 2 system to upgrade. the IRIS 1 is clunky and at some point is going to most likely fail. I did point out that if their cars didn't function correctly and parts weren't available there was a reasonable chance you could turn round to your insurers or finance providers and write the car off... Then it becomes a really big problem for McLaren as they will start being pressured and.... if they cannot resolve, lenders will stop lending and insurers will stop insuring..

Can you not source a used Iris2 and get it sorted by an indie and dealer pays?

I'm still cautious about messing with my Mclaren when it has no current issues!!

Just do not want to risk something going wrong after the install just to get Carplay...

I don't think it's particularly high risk - loads of people seem to have done it, and I've never seen any mention of problems.

I'm tempted - the car I bought last summer is the first car I've owned that has it, and it is handy. But I just don't think I'd get enough back from it - I rarely need to use maps in the McLaren (which would be the main benefit), and Alexa Auto means I can control stuff like music with my voice anyway.

(And I've discovered that - at least on my phone - using Android auto murders my phone battery on long journeys)

Following this thread with interest as I am about to take delivery of a 2019 720S Coupe (Christmas is coming early).

Seems the word from McLaren on their OEM CarPlay unit is still 'this year sometime' so not much help.

Dan's offering and previous work looks very good and I will be enquiring very soon as CarPlay is a must have for me.

re. the potential problems of an install - seems unlikely imo as any work is infotainment related vs any of the cars core electrical modules and systems. That's my view, I could be wrong... any details would be insightful.

Although that's true - for everything after the 650, aren't all the climate controls via the media screen? They definitely are on sports series - I assume on 720 too.
So a bit more than just media for those cars.

(I still think it's a low risk change though)

It's not a huge risk on the McLarens as it's an intercept / man in the middle type device not a mod to the real hardware. It sits inbetween the screen and the controller and just 'swaps' the input out to the carplay box and back.

I've done it (with Dan!) and I'm not too worried, despite having McWarranty. If something bad did happen pretty confident you could pull it all out and they wouldn't be able to definitely tell it was ever there.

It’s finding a brand new unit. And making sure it works and if it doesn’t being able to return it. I don’t really want to spin the bottle on a non dealer sourced part that’s £5k. I’m a little too chicken…

Official retrofit prices appearing, £2600. No real technical details yet, I can't imagine it's too far removed from the existing kits so be interesting how they justify 3x the price!

Part of the ForSeven pricing strategy, as with spare parts.

Oh well, be thankful for our Independent's

Guildford were brilliant with me when I had to wait ages for the passenger airbag sensor upgrade kit when my original load sensing bolts failed.

But better supply of legacy parts would be good for sure.

I’m personally very happy with Iris 1 on my car. It works very well for music and I just put the phone in a cradle for WAZE on the raw occasion I need that.

I decided to take the plunge, and went the self fit route.
Would highly recommend Dan and 12kretrofits.

Looking at these pics are the colours more vibrant in sunlight than the standard screen? ie/ you can actually see it in the sun smile

This was in my garage, so probably a bit more of a contrast than normal; but perfectly fine in usual use.
We used it to drive to the B road stag Kent DU meet on Saturday, and it was fine to view for the 200 mile round trip.

I'm out again with DU on Sunday, car won't be in daylight before then, if my memory works ok I can take some more daylight type pictures and post if you'd like.
