What sort of cost are there in reality to running and owning one of these?

I currently run two cars, a LS430 and Turbo'd Elise so fuel expenditure is spendy tongue out

The Elise is staying for obvious reasons, leaving the Lexus for the chopping block.

Current expenditure on the Lexus is:

£3800 purchase price
£400 per month on fuel
£25 per month tax
£40 per month insurance

18 months in and no repairs yet, been reliable as expected.

Been looking at the Leaf and i3.

The Leaf will be cheaper overall, is the i3 worth the premium?

Anyone care to share their real world overall ownership costs?

I have assumed you get about 24 mpg in the lexus and therefore do about 20k miles a year to get to your £400 month fuel cost.

Similar 'fuel' cost in the i3 should be about £60-£70 month.

Based on no deposit, the current 1.3% PCP deal with 20k miles a year is £450/month. (rex version)

You have done well (been lucky?) on repairs, but tyres and servicing costs should be less on the i3. Cheaper road tax too. Some depreciation on the lexus too.

Seems to me you can run a brand new i3, with the added benefits of being a new car, for simialr or less than what the lexus is costing you per month, and definitely less if the lexus does ever go wrong.

Think it was 13/14K.

Bought on 106K Jan 16 and now on 124K.

Could get it to about 10K by using the other car more smile

Rough calc on fuel saving...

£400 @ £5 per gallon @ 30mpg = approx 2,400 miles

2,400 miles @ approx 2p per mile on leccy = £48 so £352 saving on fuel.

Ahh, but you are doing half those miles so only £24 a month on leccy!

yep, so you will be running the i3 for about the same as your current fuel cost (give or take). Go and test drive one, I think it will impress you.

A couple of hours with one was enough for me to order it - Arrives September. There is currently about a 4-5 month wait!

Had a good think on it overnight, it doesn't make financial sense if the two costs are so similar.
The pcp cost and depreciation is a killer smash

Will have a look at the Leaf costs, someone I know is paying £150 a month on one of the new 30kwh Teckna's.

Used to own an LS and have been driven in an i3

Totally different league as far as build quality, comfort/refinement and power/smoothness.

i have never even been in an LS so have to of course caveat comments, but I would be surprised if build quality of a £4k car is now as good as a brand new i3? You are probably right on comfort.
?
Im sure the LS is silky smooth, but surely not as smooth as electric drivetrain?

I agree. A brand new i3 is a massive step up from an old 100k miles plus old Lexus in all those areas.

Comparing a brand new i3 with something that has a going in cost around 10% of the i3 price (like a £3800 Lexus) isn't really apples for apples is it?

Over and above the lease cost, which includes RFL, mine is about 2p per mile electric, £289 for the year for insurance
