I think you would struggle to get 140m just on electric, you would have to use the Rex. I get home with range of 5-10 miles left. The Rex will automatically kick in at 5m or 5-6% battery charge. You would probably use one tank every 4 days at £10.

I charge fully every night and precondition when I'm using it for the commute. Not used any fuel since I've had the home charger fitted.
The next i3 will get a better battery, should do 150-160 on electric. Not sure if it's in 2018 or 19.

Hi Mits, how much range does your car show at the end of a 120 mile commute? I do 140 a day and would love to be able to do that in an i3 Rex without using any fuel. Do you think that's possible?
Thanks,
Rich
I'm another one on the higher end commutes (80
miles).

After my days commute i have usually 50 miles in my battery as on average I get 4.2 miles per kWh.

Warmer weather means I'm seeing 138 - 142 miles on the read out in the morning but I'd knock 10 miles off just to be safe. All I would say is that you wouldn't be spending all that much out of petrol and a tank may do you for the week.

Just to confirm, I wouldn't count on being able to do a 140 mile commute on all electric without recharging.

You could just about do it if the weather was warm and you had no heating / ac and you are cautious with your acceleration / speed.

However, you would probably only need to use the REx for about 20 miles or so, so only a small amount of fuel consumed. The 9 litre tank would last 3-4 days.

Hi all,

Rather than starting a fresh thread can I ask a quick question to long-term i3 owners on here... does the range deplete as your cars/batteries have got old?

I ask as I'm looking to buy one of the first REX i3s (late 2013) which has covered about 30,000 miles for commuting about 75 miles each day (so that's 150 there and back with the ability to charge at both ends).

I don't mind leaning on the generator and using a bit of petrol each day, but if the realistic electric range has halved since it was new, then I might need to reconsider the whole idea.

Thanks in advance for any advice/thoughts.

I'm on my second one! As a commuter car neither of mine have ever done big mileage, but when I handed mine back with 18k the range was the same as new. Bear in mind that the range naturally fluctuates in different times of year. Winter can be getting on for half the electric range of summer. Bear that in mind. You'll be getting around 60-70 electric miles range in winter with the older generations of battery in that car.

Collecting a new 94ah Rex this Saturday. Had the old one in 2015 but had so many issues with the charging network that I got fed up with it.

Bought the last one just as MK did away with free electric car parking and charging and had so many rfid cards I got messed about with what and where I could charge up.

Now circumstances have changed slightly I'm looking forward to running one that has a DC charger and longer battery life, plus it seems that most charge points can be activated with an app so less cards.
How are the charging points getting on in Milton Keynes these days? Don't live there but visit quite frequently.

Mine is on order so I can't speak first hand. However, the i3 Facebook is a gold mine of info.

The higher mileage users on there do not seem to be having any issues with battery life/degradation.

In fact, I read on there that software updates to people's cars have resulted in slightly more range because BMW were apparently cautious about how far they push the batteries and are squeezing a little more from them as their data collected allows. That could be BS, but it is what I read on there.

Also current cars come with 8yr/100k battery warranty for if efficiency drops below a certain level and i assume older cars have this too?

ETA: with the ability to charge at work, you must be looking at some big savings!!

I didn't notice any degradation on my i3 which had 40,000 km when I returned it. In the winter I'd see about 110km and in summer about 155km.

I've just completed a 170 round trip covering Dual carriage ways, A roads and Bridges roads along the south coast (drove to Eastbourne)

Of that 170 miles the last 5 were under petrol as the a i3 Rex won't allow you to continue using pure EV if you hit 6% remaining power. Worked out that means the cost of electric and small amount of petrol means I did trip well under £5!!!!

It did mean ECO+ and being very careful and mindful to get the most out of the car at one point I was at 6.3 kWh/mile! But overall I got 5.8 so not bad at all.

This in contrast to my daily 80 mile commute where I get 4.2 but this is heated seats, free use of climate control and definitely not touching eco mode.

Tailgated by a clearly range anxious i3 on the A27 earlier at 75mph in my 10ft tall camper.

Not at all amusing to look in the rear view to see he'd clearly lost all power.

hehe

Haha I worried that you were posting about me but realised I didn't go above 56mph for the best part of 3 hours today.

I wouldn't worry about battery degradation.

I did 24,000 miles in my first i3 and there was no degradation in that time.

I have a 94 now and the range is superb. Can get 160 miles out of the battery taking it steady now it's warmer.

Thanks all! Bought and will see how it copes with the mammoth commute.

I have signed up to POLAR so that I can charge in London.

Quick question for the uninitiated though - how does one go about 30-min top up charging at motorway services (where available)? Is this pay as you go or do I need yet another card? If so, which one?

Just had my brand new 94aH Rex delivered at 8:30 this morning. Been out for a bit of a blast and initial comments feelings are:

Brakes are no where near as responsive as in my 550. Really got stamp on them in comparison
With the 19" wheels, you really do feel the pot holes
It's a bit weird. Was waiting at the roundabout and heard a strange noise. Though car had a problem. Turned out it was the engine noise from the bus in front.
Boot is tiny.

Other than that, it is a great car, and I think I will love driving it. Doesn't seem to be a car that you can "drive it like you stole it" though.

The motorway chargers are provided by ecotricity. You need the app to initiate a charge.

Loads of info for a new i3 owner on the i3 UK Facebook group. We are also having a big i3 meet at BMW HQ in September.

Honnetly it's a great little car.

You'll find you won't need your brakes as you get use to the regen motor breaking.

Also be pleased that you didn't buy the car with 20" wheels.

Enjoy!

It's not a car that likes to be "thrown around" ie people who can't drive smoothly probably won't like it. But calm you inputs, and you'll find it's really pretty good round the bends. In fact, the level of traction, and subtlety of traction control intervention (thanks to the 'lecy drivetrains rapid response / low inertia) is very very good indeed. There is one bend out of a slippery roundabout where my i3 leaves my 335 for dead up to around 65mph...........

Collected!

It's actually an early 2014 car with circa 20k on it.

Initial observations:

- What do I use the left pedal for? wink
- Tramlining like I've never experienced before
- Awesome turning circle
- Range extender sounds like a toy tractor in the boot
- Such a pleasant place to sit

Love it!
