They are warranted for 100,000 miles and 8 years. No idea on replacement cost.
That's amazing if true. Do they warranty the range though or is a 20 mile range ok at 4 years?
Why is it amazing? EV's and hybrids have been around for over a decade, and the batteries have proved to be very robust. When there are failures you can replace individual blades or cells, so the whole unit isn't replaced. As they are easy to fix, there is a maket in refurbs which cost in the hundreds not thousands.

So after 80-100k you might need a refurb, and its going to cost less than a clutch. In fact it will cost a whole lot less than a lot of issues on an ICE car. Recently I've had to replace the fuel pump, and the clutch on my mondeo. Ford wanted £1000 for the clutch, and £300 just to supply the pump and the fuel tank has to come out to fit it

I imagine a pretty healthy and affordable aftermarket for battery refurbs and upgrades will spring up.

Remember upgrading the battery in your remote controlled car from the standard 1200mah battery pack it came with to a 1700mah cell matched battery pack and the dramatic improvement in both range and performance? Same deal here. smile

its funny how the same old battery myths come up again. and again. The same happened when the Prius came out, As a geek I was nearly tempted, but as a petrol head I just couldnt get myself to commeit to a car with. slushy CVT and too. much lean round corners, back then everyone was saying the batteries wouldnt last. Now we have taxi drivers picking them up at 80k and sticking another 100-200k on them, i think the record so far is 250k on the original battery pack.

Put it this way, I dont think BMW would want their first EV to be screwed after 5 years. And as said previously bettery tech is improving and getting cheaper all the timel Whos to say after 8 years when the battery goes out of warranty youll be able to pick up a new larger capacity 300 miles range for £500? Maybe BMW themselves will offer upgrade paths.

Woukd I get one? Not just yet, I always wait till version 1.3 comes out... so you know the bugs are gone. As its now basically a huge rolling laptop I'll let other people do the beta testing, and get one when my current car lease runs out in 2015. There might be a few more makes and models to choose from by then.

On a side note, audi must see it as a threat as theyve been running their Etron ads, but theirs isnt an EV, so nine of the benefits of losing all the ICE components. I guess they are aiming at the main famiky car market... not the second car family. Id be quite happy to have a i3 as a main car, theres no job Ive had in the last 20 years where I wouldnt have been able to make the commute in a single charge.

I'm quite a regular at enterprice/hertz as I had 6 months without a cara year or so ago and only really need a car every other weekend. Its amazing what you can hire for £70 for the weekend... ie when you need a longer range vehicle. They even do a premium service these days, so if you fancy trying out a guiletta, xf 3.0d, 520d touring or er, a ds3, theyre available to reserve. I took a guiletaa all the way from brum to edinburgh and back, nice car that.

Do dealers have demos now?.

I was in my dealer recently and they had an electric 1 series coupe on a 12 plate. Looked like a promotional car though.

We have three of these at work but the company have made it near impossible to justify taking one. They are meant to help BMW evaluate long-term usage and promote electric cars to staff (despite only diesels on the car scheme and no charging points in our car park!).

I did have something from Dick Lovett Bristol about the i3. I've been trying to order a brochure too but BMW's mobile site doesn't want to play ball.

I have a delivery date of end Feb, apparently I am one of the 1st batch in the UK with the range extender. Bit of a difference from the Nov/Dec date I was given at first.

Got a 1 hour test drive on Wednesday.

Those who have a deep routed desire not to see electric cars suceed will continue to perpetuate the myths regardless of how untrue they have been shown to be.

I think it's mamazing just how fast the technology is moving at the moment and I don't doubt that in another 10 years electric cars will be mainstream.

Went to look at one on Saturday and the wife loved it. Going to get a test drive sorted this week. For those that have ordered what do you see as the 'essential' options?

I have gone for non-Rex with Harmdon Kardon, Winter Pack, Turbine Wheels, Metallic Paint. I also got a free upgrade to Pro Media but I think that offer has finished now.

Thanks. The salesman did mention the Pro Media upgrade. He seemed to think the DC fast charge was an essential option too, I'm not so sure.

REX
Upgraded interior to leather
Turbine spoke wheels
Sun protection glass
Metallic paint.

Not gone for fast charge as I can't see myself using it - ie waiting at the service station for 30mins while the car charges. I guess if I didn't have REX I may thing about it.
If you don't have REX I would get the option that allows cooling and heating of car whilst charging, and controlled by your iphone. Get the car warm from you bed! (with REX it is not an option)

There's no myth. Unless you can afford to run different cars for different purposes, one being extremely expensive and limiting and ultimately completely redundant and not at all green in reality - battery electric cars are a dead limb of the evolutionary tree of the car.

Battery technology is NOT going to improve significantly enough to change this fact. It is a scientific impossibility.

AFAIK there isn't anywhere in the UK you can use a Fast DC charging point yet... Could be handy in the future though I guess.
