There are so many posts in this thread comparing the i8 to this and that and blah blah blah.

If you haven't driven one, for a few days at least, you really won't appreciate what it can offer. My immediate reaction on driving it was it was OK, a lot like any BMW, but once I had stuck it in sport mode and really given it some, it was nothing like anything else I have ever driven. It is new, it is different and it is a very special car to drive. If you haven't driven one and driven it properly for at least a few days, then please stop berating it.

Oh, and I live in the countryside in Leicestershire with wonderful driving roads, have driven all sorts of cars from Caterhams to Porsches, M3's to Ariel Atoms, was a successful kart racer when younger and know what makes these machines tick. It makes everything else out there (bar the 918/P1/Laferrari etc) feel old and outdated. Perhaps not more fun, perhaps not quicker, but uniquely special.
You hit the nail on the head...you need to drive these cars for a few days to realise there full potential........do they really depreciate any more than similar cars of similar value...i dont think so......plus i feel as if im driving a baby 918...surely that cant be a bad thing

^^^ this.

I'm a year into ownership, every time I drive "other" cars I realise how modern/futuristic the i8 is.

Is this the most pointless thread ever?

Prices of nearly new/1yr old cars are effect of basic supply and demand that BMW has got all wrong. It was the 'must have' car that attracted buyers out of other market segments beyond the car's price bracket (e.g. Maccas and Lambos).

BMW thought this was a permanent market and doubled production! However, after the 'novelty' wore off, a lot of folks are returning to their maccas and lambos, cooling demand for new cars, so it's discounts a plenty (£15Kdeposit contribution and 1.8% finance no less. So 'real' depreciation shouldn't really be taken from a £105K list, because the real cost of the car is £90K).

By way of depreciation comparison, for what it's worth! before I bought the i8 (new) I had an R8. Didn't buy it new, but purchased it 2 years old. Was previously owned by Harry Styles so top, top spec, purchase sheet had it at £108K new. Price I paid from GC Motors at 2 years, 20,000 miles? £65K - so very similar to current i8 prices!

Perhaps we rename the thread to 'shock horror! All £100K sports cars values in free fall?' :-/

Base car was £100,000. Then the gov gave you £5k back and BMW deposit contrib at least £5k so circa £90k.

It was well specced but many about £5k in options.

The first owner of mine paid over £8,000 for laser headlights.

Are they any good? I would go for this as an option when I buy used - so few have them - did they withdraw it after a short time?

They are still an option, down to a bargain £5100 I think. The 7 series has them now too.

They certainly light up the road well. However, there is little opportunity to use them. They are full beam only, and only come on over 44 mph. Below that, you only have the normal LEDs. If you are mainly driving in town, they are pointless.

Drove from Leeds to London today. Full tank = £50, finished with 2/3rd's of the tank left so spent circa £15 for the whole journey. Forgot how efficient and comfortable these were.

I don't think they have fallen so much.

New the car would cost £106k with options

BMW are offering £20 to £25k discount, 4 years 0% finance (so lets say thats worth £10k) which brings the new cost to around £75k +/-

A one year old used car is around £66k so its really not too bad.

I think they will bottom out at £55k to £60k, I replaced my 911, GT4 ( and later M6) with a i8, its just such a good car and there is not much at the price point that can compete with it.

Kudos

May I ask a possibly stupid question? Possibly better directed into finance forum, but it relates to i8.

I'm seriously tempted to pick up an i8 as a second car and running through my business as a company car.

I'm seeing lease deals of c£800-£850/month + VAT + deposit. Presume this is for new car.

Second hand of £65-£70k ish and the figure above of £75k new from dealer with discount.

I'd prefer not to buy outright as don't want to take a chunk of cash out of the business. Can I either "lease" a second hand or buy/finance a new one at the £75k ish figure? Or do I just have to go down the standard business lease route?

If you are thinking of running it through your business then speak to your accountant. If you purchase a new i8, it qualifies for 100% first-year write down which is quite a tax windfall. And you can still PCP it, so you're not tying up lots of cash, or losing half the rental VAT.

Seems hard to believe there are deals available for new cars in the range of £75K when BMW main dealers are selling secondhand cars for more than that? A quick check on the approved used list shows roughly 25% of the cars in the range of £75-82K, all with "normal" colours, not individual paint or the Protonic Red edition. Or have I missed something?

Their website suggest the current contribution is about fifteen grand if you take finance @ 1.8 % plus maybe a bit more from the dealer which boils down to about a grand a month

Try one if its tempting - much easier to finance and get the tax benefits for a new one than used

But you'll have to pay BIK on it, which is £3k this year, £3.8k next year and £5.4k in 2018/19. (Based on current list prices - even a used car will be taxed at the list price, excluding discounts, when new)

True. But that is small beans compared to the possible £44k back from the tax man by writing the vehicle off in year one.

And when you come to sell it, you pay most of it back.
