Ongoing tax is linked to emissions - it's just that for the first 3 years there's an extra premium if the car costs over £40k.
No it’s not as far as I have read.

The first year is based on emissions.

The next 5 years, until the car’s 6th birthday there’s £310 above the standard rate which is £0 for EVs and £140 for ICE. So £40k + EVs are £310, ICE £450 for years 2-6.

As, pretty soon, there’re not going to be that many decent EVs costing less than £40k (list) and quite a few new ones that will be significantly more, that means that many will pay that tax.

Unless you’re into old or cheap EVs tax will be payable.

As far as I’m concerned it’s not that significant. There’s plenty of opportunity elsewhere to avoid tax and this sort of thing just encourages me to do it.

Apologies - you're correct. It's basically a £310 surcharge for the first 5 years. I believe it's the total cost including all options, so quite a few relatively ordinary cars can exceed this threshold.

Not quite the same price, but anyone who bought a Saab in the last 6 years of its life did!!

I hope they do though.

Does anyone know why people give Musk so much credit for stuff? I find it slightly cultish and weird. Seems to only exist in car companies that are stuff to do with the "tech world." Dyson and Jobs are two other notable ones that spring to mind. In reality, they're generally good capitalists who throw other people's money at the right people sometimes and just force through things that are not necessarily brilliant.

I've been working in this industry for the past decade and it's so odd to see it happening. It also seems to be a hugely Western phenomenon and I don't recall it happening with NextEV/Nio, Faraday and Lynk & co etc. Is it just celebrity culture now becoming part of everything and us needing false idols?

Been wondering for a while. Fully expect people to blindly defend the CEOs ITT and find it really interesting.
The reason why I personally am such a Musk fan is because he invests in technologies that have been billed as the future since the 50's. Whilst NASA, ESA, JAXA etc. are tied down in bureaucracy and in-fighting over fund allocation, Musk has in 15 years taken a start-up and developed self-landing rockets. I was absolutely gobsmacked during the Falcon heavy launch. Tesla has also probably made a bigger push toward maturing BEV technologies than any other single OEM, and he has released the patents to boot. He helped revolutionise online payments with PayPal.

Some of his other ventures (The Boring Company, Hyperloop, SolarCity) may prove to be less influential, but he is putting money into them where others see them as too big a financial risk/burden.

He seems ot care more about advancing technology than making money, at least for now.

To me, he is fulfilling of all these futuristic promises that have been handed to us over the last 6 decades.

These clowns saying Tesla won't happen etc have been saying it since the roadster.

It's just like the people who said video games were a fad, the internet is for losers, mobile phones won't take off etc. etc.

Hilarious to watch but you have to feel a bit sorry for them.

I'm curious though, those of you who think Tesla is going nowhere, seeing as the Rodster, the ModelS, the ModelX & 500,000 preorders for the model3 didn't sway your view, what WOULD it take for you to admit Tesla/Musk is a success and here to stay?

Tesla is not EVs. It's more analogous to doubting Atari or Nokia.
