I have a colleague who has recently bought a brand new RAV 4 and it’s only returning 37mpg on a mix of urban and long journeys. Surely this is not right? Or is it just how a heavy hybrid should perform?

Sounds quite good for an overweight / underpowered mini SUV

It should be averaging over 40mpg (42.4 for the 4WD, 45.7 for the 2WD) according to the real mpg site, if it's brand new then 37 isn't that far off..

Driving style with hybrids is crucial to mpg, my wife averages 52mpg with our Yaris hybrid, with a little effort I can easily get 60+mpg.

I wouldn't expect too much more from a heavy suv that's not a plug in but it does sound low.

Thats epic. Our works Outlander PHEV averages about 29mpg on a decent run.
And only has a 200 mile range.

There is something wrong with it then, mine spends most of it's life on motorways travelling at high speed and it is averaging 37mpg.

For short distances driven very very hard with no charge i can get it down to mid 20's, but over a decent motorway journey the average will go back up.
