Long time no chat PH!

We're currently awaiting delivery of a Tesla Model S, due in 2-4 weeks-ish. Had a call inviting us to some sort of new owners meeting thing. Seemed to be about how to drive the car (seemed pretty straight forward on the test drives!) and meeting other Tesla owners.

It'd involve over an hours drive each way assuming we could get a babysitter. Is it actually worth it?!

Not sure I would do this, sounds horrible. Take the 3 points or a speed awareness course.

While it would be good to get the insight of a Tesla owner that's gone through this, I agree it doesn't sound like much fun. Why would I want to meet other Tesla owners? Maybe give them a call and see what it involves in more detail.

It's to implant the chip so you become a fully fledged member of the Tesla cult - run! wink

Get on facebook forum - ask for a buddy/mentor and they'll email and chat with you and possibly even have a call with you to help you out. I certainly wouldn't to session but I would try and get some advice.

We've talked about it and ideally people should have a chat before they buy to try and prevent the odd bit of buyer remorse. Too many people talk too optimistically about the cars - they are good. but like most things, being better than expectation is a better feeling than any absolute measure of how good they are. Ie tell someone they'll get 200 miles reliably and when they do, if not a little more, they#ll feel great, whereas saying you'll get 250 and then they only ever get 220 is likely to piss you off, especially if you needed thise extra few miles on a regular basis and if you'd know you might have opted for a different model/wheel choice etc. .

You’ll certainly get a wealth of info from the FB group but I still found the meeting useful and I’m glad I went - although I’d didn’t have to travel as far as you. It was interesting talking to other soon to be owners and certainly didn’t think it a waste of time. It’s one of those occasions where you’ll probably pick up a nugget or two that makes the time a worthwhile investment. YMMV of course.

So what sort of things do they cover?

Mine was about 8 weeks before delivery (I think) and it covered the process once the car arrived at Tilburg and when we could expect a firm collection date/the PDI/handover. What cables the car would come with and how they fitted into the various charging options/Type 2/CHAdeMO/home charging eg tethered/untethered etc.

Real world range and the Supercharger network (which wasn’t anything like as good as it is now)/tips on insurance and basically anything else that soon to be owners wanted to ask.

TBH I had been active on the forums for a year before I bought so knew more than guy running it, but I still felt it was a useful experience. As has been mentioned, you could pick up loads via the FB group/fora and may not benefit from it enough to warrant the effort.

In truth though some of the posts on the group display an astonishing lack of research, particularly around real world range and charging options. Given the fundamental difference in how these things are fuelled compared to ICE vehicles the new owner “orientation” events are solely needed by some.

Backing up the comment above.

Iv had my 90d for 2 years and I still love it. (just changed insurance to liverpool victoria by the way - very competitive)

I`m a nerd for a living, I followed Elon`s activities and it took me a long time to finally press the button to order one, more money than iv ever spent on a car or probably ever will again but the man math`s and various other factors just made me go for it.

When it came to this new owners meeting, I found it absolutely terrifying about how people will spunk 90k on a car and do ZERO research... "WHAT I HAVE TO PLUG IT IN?" ... so I wouldn`t bother going. It was a waste of a Saturday morning.

Watch out you don`t become a "Tesla zombie" though....you will see what I mean when you get in the owners group over on FB

I didn't learn anything that I didn't already know so felt it was a waste of time when I went but to echo comments from another poster, some people appeared to have no idea what they'd ordered other than the name of it!

Oh dear! We had 2 really long chats at the showroom so feel like we covered loads then, plus already having had a PHEV and now the e-golf we’re not completely blind to the practicalities.
