On swappable batteries, with looming battery shortages and the huge cost, is it economically viable? Isn’t it better to simply leverage the growing rapid charging network coupled with a ‘home’ on-street charging solution for people without a drive / garage (some v interesting solutions are going to be launched / revealed v soon to address this).
I honestly dont get the battery swap thing, causes so many issues to solve a problem that is going away rapidly anyhow

The biggest problem I have always seen with battery swapping is that to make it really work wouldn’t all cars have to have the same batteries? Or at least one battery per manufacturer? Otherwise keeping track of all the different battery sizes would be a nightmare. Or the manufacturers have no way of differentiating the different models.

Being cynical you would be pretty annoyed if you turned up to swap in your 100kw battery and you are told sorry only have 64kw in at the moment. You would hope it would be better figured out that but you could see it happening.

I know one company at a recent motor show had modular packs you could add more to later or even rent for longer trips.

So big battery = 8 modules, city car = 1-2 etc.

That’s the service that does make sense so that for 360 days of the year you aren’t lugging about a load of inefficient waste that has cost thousands to buy but I wonder if substantially changing the weight of the vehicle then messes with the power regeneration?
