Anyone done this?

In essence, have a 7kw home charger with tethered type 1 cable on it but about to get EV with type 2 socket.

I know an adapter is available for this but would prefer a new tethered cable given charger will be used daily.

Contacted chargemaster but they wanted upwards of £450 to fit new charging box

Box is British Gas polar type installed 2015 approx

Thanks

You can wire this in yourself if you feel capable, I would.

Thanks for that but no way would I try to DIY

Good to know part is readily available so I guess any competent electrician could do it

There is definitely an adaptor available my sister got one when going from the Leaf to the Zoe, I think it was £90.

I got a local sparky to “upgrade” my 7kW BMW wall box with a longer (10m) cable. He charged me £250 of which the new cable cost close to £200 so pretty happy. It took him half an hour.

I enquired about swapping my 5 metre type 2 to a 10 metre and was quoted £210 for the supply and fit (£175 + VAT) by my original installer.

Not done it as rather than route the cable around the car I'm throwing it over the roof.

Thanks all

Sounds like proposed modification is entirely possible but in my case original installer not interested in anything other than an expensive charger swap

You might be eligible for a grant for the new charger incl installation. (Apparently you're allowed a max of 2 units per household, which makes sense given its not impossible for there to be 2 EV / PHEVs in one driveway.)

If you're in Scotland speak to jorro.co.uk. I've found them to be very helpful and pragmatic.

This will only apply if you have another/different EV. You can have as many as you need in reality as long as you have enough cars (although your home supply is still the limiting factor).

Honestly, if you can wire a 13A plug you could fit this.
