I have a communal car park and i got the grant with the charger fitted to the car park (no idea what the installer filled in on the form) i cant see how you cant get the grant if its on your property

As we look to order an iPace this has been a really interesting thread.

What is the best way to have a quality install carried out?

Ideally I'd like to have it coinciding with running power to the shed from the consumer unit at the front of the house.

Based in Harrogate if anyone has recommendations.
I think you can apply if you have somewhere you can park the car, even if it's not "official" whatever that means. The installer will just supply whatever evidence they need on the form, e.g. a map or photo of the location.

I’m surprised no one has said how they love the Zappi- seems very popular on other EV forums

I have a Zappi, it's great!

The cost of the unit is slightly more than others, but you don't need an earth rod or a type B RCD so the total cost is very competitive. Works best if you have solar PV as you can set it to charge just using any excess solar power that would otherwise be exported so long as it's over 1.4kW.

Yes I have solar, so was thinking I’d go Zappi (likely Eddi at the same time)

But that Anderson unit looks great

Yup, I’d echo this
Had ours since last July, it is great to be able to have just excess solar (proper free fuel!).

We also use ours to boost to the maximum (7kW) during our 5p/kW Octopus Energy cheap period overnight. 4 hours at that gives us 28kW for 20p.....around 100-125 miles travel.
Pre-covid19, our normal journeys were under 70miles on any day, so this adds up to cheap motoring!

(*ManMaths duly applied - don’t ask how much the EV cost, or the Zappi unit....it’s an investment for the future hehe)

That's the problem at the moment. The EV can be justified because it definitely pays out over a few years and it's so much better to drive than a fossil, but the expensive charger... It will take a very long time to pay off vs just setting the charge timer.

Solar PV of course always pays for itself in the end.

I hope that's sarcasm.

Assuming you stay in the house long enough it does

Where did you read that nonsense? PV always pays for itself in the medium term.

I recommend you get quotes for a home charger.

The Rolec prices never include an external earth rod being installed, which is compulsory unless you plan to charge your vehicle inside your garage - which is unlikely in most cases.

One useful tip: It could be a good time to look at your energy provider - for TWO very good reasons!

1. Many energy providers offer cheap off peak tariffs for EV drivers, this could save you alot of money over the years [could be as low as 6p/kWh]
2. Some energy providers will offer you either a "FREE" or heavily "DISCOUNTED" EV charging point which will be cheaper than going directly to a manufacturer or installer.

Because you must have your own dedicated parking space. Communal parking is very hit and miss. If anyone is ever likely to walk by/behind your car when it's charging and potentially trip over the cable OLEV will not allow the grant. There are many instances where an install would be fine but OLEV don't have the resources to check every one and so go with a blanket approach. Also, for communal parking you need to be able to run a supply from your flat/apartment, often across a car park and then fit to a post which can make costs add up significantly. its rare OLEV agree to grants for properties with communal parking.

If you can prove that you have your own private parking space you should be ok but it will have the be very obvious.

Incorrect assertion. Depends on the installer. Here's the earth rod being installed which did not cost me extra:

We were looking into one for my parent's house as they have a surplus because of solar, I ended up buying a Tesla charger.
They are not smart but quite slim, take nearly all installations and are pretty cheap, especially if you take the one with the 7m cable.

Did you consider the zappi charger that follows the solar production?

Well, for now we get all the energy back still so it's a bit skewed. Most other decent chargers, like the Zappi, are also twice the cost. The ROI time on that would defeat the purpose.

Just checked, the equivalent Zappi was 1059 EUR. The Tesla one was 450 EUR iirc.

Mine was also done at no extra cost on my Rolec installation

Hi Guys,

Finally taking the plunge to go for a hybrid car - less miles to do now while working at home and think a petrol hybrid is a good first step before move to full EV adoption in few years.

Just ordered the new Land Rover Disco PHEV (which follows the Range Rover PHEV released 18 months back) - wondering what charging point will be best to get? This is very big market and quite confusing! Car will be arriving in September so have sometime but wish to get on this as don't think want to to spend 7 hours charging it via 3pin plug. Would like the charging point to be future proof as change cars.

The LR website has 2 recommended PodPoint and BP CHARGEMASTER.

https://www.landrover.co.uk/vehicles/phev/home-cha...

Also one other key question I have if I have leased the car does that you are eligible for the OLEV grant of £350?
Any advice is very much appreciated especially anyone who has had the Range Rover PHEV all very new and exciting!

Thanks

J

Yes, as long as you keep it for 6 months plus (not that they go back and check).
