Untethered 7kw Rolec. Known industry wide as most reliable and that counts if you come home and it fails to charge. What do you do then?!

We have had two in use since our first pair of Leafs arrived in 2012. Utterly dependable.

I used evonestop.co.uk no complaints from me. Bought 3 things so far: type 2 to Type 1 (5m) for the outlander, type2 to type2 (10m) for tesla and type t2 to type1 converter so I can get rid of the 5m cable.
Thanks, ordered from their Black Friday deal so around £145 all in

The older ones had a bad RCBO (circuit breaker) in them which tended to burn out, but not actually catch fire. I replaced mine myself but the newer ones are fine.

It's good because it's simple. All these smart ones are just more things to go wrong and also full of security holes. One of the manufacturers admitted they were using encryption that was declared dead back in the 90s, for example.

Yep, with multiple car manufacturers using different tech, multiple different chargers and now smart charging apps etc it's amazing anyone can charge at all! Unfortunately it's the challenge of a rapidly growing new sector with multiple suppliers. And we thought VHS vs. Betamax was a challenge! hehe

Hi all,

I am new to this section, and reading up on EV's as I am an ADI and getting some training on EV's next week, so wanted to know a little about them before I go on the course.

In this thread you are talking about tethered and untethered...... what does it mean? and what are the benefits of either?

Cheers

Tethered have an integral cable which makes them more handy as you don't have to get your cable out each time, but they need to be in a more protected spot as the cable there all the time, when not in use you have to coil up the cable and hang it up.

Untethered just have a port on the charger for you to attach your regular charge cable to.

Tethered just means that the charging point has a fixed cable. Non means it’s just a plug the you plug a cable into on charging.

Thanks for the replies,

Is a tethered lead/charging point an extra?

and does the socket on the side of the car allow for both?

does the lead that comes with the car have a 3 pin connecter ?

and do you have to buy another lead for use to plug in when away from home? so have to carry min of two leads?

cheers again smile

We install the EO Mini chargers. I won't knock our competitors but the big difference is that the EO MINI is much smaller than the other ones and people don't tend to want big plastic chargers on the front of their homes these days. Tech has moved on. They all work well and all should have data connectivity/wi-fi with apps/without apps. Our experience is virtually no-one asks for app controls on chargers.
Could you let me know who "we" is, is it a company you work for? I'm in Fleet and assume you're local based on the user name! I'm looking to have a charger installed and think an EO Mini may be the best option.

We’ve enquired via the website for an EO mini and still waiting for them to respond.

Anybody know the usual wait time for install?

Thanks.

It took 10 days from enquiry to install for my EO Mini. I contact EO who put me through to EV Charging Solutions in Nottinghamshire.

Most cars come with two leads. A "granny lead" or EVSE, which has a 3 pin plug. Also a Type 2 lead that plugs in to a dedicated charger like the ones you find in car parks or you can have installed at home.

I'd suggest getting a tethered charger because you will soon get fed up of having to take your cable out every time you want to plug in.

You can leave it plugged in. My tethered charge cable is irritatingly short.

In 3 years we've fitted about 3 chargers with tethers. People seem to prefer them without but its personal preference. They cost a bit more but not too much. One issue is that you end up with a big roll of cable which can look quite messy, especially if you've gone for a very small, neat charger.

See the link in my profile (so that I don't get flamed for 'advertising', although you have asked). It's my company. Drop me a PM and I'll give you an overview of all you need to know (only takes about 2 mins).

Are yours just rebranded EO ones? How much are they (after the grant)?
Also what does "3 year data connection included" mean and what functions would you be missing after 3 years?

tethered is less hassle to use, putting the free cable in the boot when its wet and covered in crap its picked up from the ground is just nasty, especially in the cold (i bought a boot liner)

cabled means you have the cable with you so can use it on other points if needed, if the tethered cable gets damaged you are looking at an electrician to come and change it, amazon will deliver a new cable next day if yours gets damaged

although i have a 10 and 5 m cable in my car so if the 10 gets damaged i will just user 'er indoors spot and charge with the 5m

I've just had an Andersen A2 fitted and it is great. The cable is easy to unwind and rewind and is completely hidden when not is use. It doesn't require an earth rod and the supply cable can be rear entry, making it extremely neat.

Frimley111r - have you fitted any Andersen units?
