To make up for the thread that was deleted the other day (content creation or not, every video game group and forum in the land has one of these threads going). Let's hear your unpopular opinions in video games, the more contentious the better.

I'll start, and I'll go wity a few bits on survival horror since it is such a contentious topic:

1) Resident Evil 4 is totally overrated. All the hard work of building atmosphere in the first third of the game is totally squandered by the time Leon gets to the castle. Things get even worse at the end when you end up on the island military base. Yet another case of the budget running out and the ending being budged, which kind of sounds like...

2) Resident Evil 7 is total ste. It's heralded as some sort of masterpiece because it runs well. Being a walking simulator with very little environmental interactivity, you would expect that. The family of baddies are just goofy. The biggest sin though is the introduction of that stupid little girl as the main antagonist. It seemed like Capcom were going for a spooky supernatural element with the generic spooky ghost girl. Revealing it later to be yet more genetic modification and viral tampering shatterd any suspension of disbelief. The long section on the cargo ship at the end felt like utter padding, but imagine the run time without it.

5) RE5 is miles better than RE4 and there is no denying that.

6) I much preferred the dark and violent tone of Silent Hill 3 to the grey-toned, subdued atmosphere if Silent Hill 2. They're both great but SH3 was the more horrifying experience, if not the better story.

And on the subject of great RPG's:

7) Final Fantasy 7 is rightly regarded as a masterpiece RPG but Final Fantasy 9 is the better game, with better characters, a more consistent look and feel and a better story.

The Last of Us is overrated crap. When you put cinematics and storytelling before gameplay, at least have good characters and a decent plot. A dull, uninteresting trudge through dreary landscapes with little to show for it.

FIFA is a terrible football game.

Gran Turismo went downhill after the 5th game (although I have been enjoying GTSport a bit recently)

Games are too complicated and controllers have too many buttons ... they make the whole pickup/play process really hard ... the whole concept of 'missions' is rubbish ... bring back side scroller platformers on the 8bit/16bit consoles.

yes add in controls so vague its like trying to thread a needle with jelly too.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is fantastically detailed graphically, sadly thats where the good news ends. There is no story, its just a collection of repeated "ride your horse to this place, shoot people, ride back to camp" with minor detail variations. There is no link between the missions, no progression in story or characters, they even ran out of ideas for the later bits of the game and resorted to making the player occasionally press a button to advance cut scenes.

Agree on that ref RDR2.. it's just so slooooooww!

I would say Pro Evo has always been miles better than FIFA.. I fail to see how anyone who has actually played football can think FIFA is any good.

Also Gran Turismo 2 was the high spot for me.. loved the randomness of the used cars and feeling of progression without 'grind'.

GTA Vice City is also my favourite of the GTA games.. That soundtrack and the 80's vibes were amazing and I would love to see a remake.

Not mentioned before but I thought Mass Effect Andromeda was great (especially multiplayer) and I was a huge fan of the original trilogy.

Oh and Command and Conquer 4 was an absolute slap in the face of anyone who played the franchise up to that point. Completely changed the whole game on the 4th sequel!

Probably not an unpopular opinion.

The first 15 minutes was spectacular, the rest total drivel.

The first Last of Us was truly spectacular, an absolutely brilliant game. If you play it on a higher difficulty, it really adds an element of fear and panic as your best laid plans fall apart. The story is great.

HOWEVER, I am now playing through the Last of Us 2. The story is not great. I started on a higher difficulty, and after the first few encounters it just became painful - an hour dying repeatedly to eventually get past an encounter, to find yourself with no ammo and no health and onto the next encounter - which was exactly the same sneak/die/sneak/die/sneak/die/sneak/die process.

In the end, I have dropped the difficulty down to normal and resources down to loads and just playing it as an easy run/gun story game. Except the story is still stupid so not enjoying it nearly as much as I enjoyed the first one. I am not sure why I didn't find the gameplay as annoying when I played through the first - probably in part as it was a new experience and partly because I was younger and had more time. I also am not convinced it was as annoying and repetitive...

Don't think that's an unpopular opinion.

There is just so much filler and icons on the map. It's a better side mission polished ass creed game, with boobs.

Agreed.

My unpopular opinion is that the vast majority of new games are overrated and not very fun to play. Especially narrative driven games such as Zero Dawn Horizon and God of War where you have very little freedom bore me to death.

Maybe it’s me losing interest.

I vehemently disagree with your opinion on the Witcher and Horizon: Zero Dawn. Both fab. Though the Witcher is a bit long, you don't need to do every side mission.

God of War was a game I never really understood though. Dull!

Deadlines and the need to be the latest and greatest is ruining games: most games come with zero content or all the best stuff is kept behind paywalls rather than skill based rewards

Online bits of open world games are rubbish.

- full of 13 yrs olds and 32 rs olds who have modded the hell out of their characters, using infinite funds from money farming, and who instantly kill me, or whizz past at 8 trillion miles an hour.

And my own opinion is that it is a total and utter rip off to have DLC that you have to buy. Even worse in online games where you can find yourself ejected from a game because it moves to a map you don't have....
