Evening,

Going to move my wife’s 2018 X5 40d on to hopefully buy/lease an EV cheaply through our business... but my knowledge of EVs is pretty poor.

- X5 is quick (0-60 in 5.8), so want something similar or quicker.
- X5 is big, something similarly sized? Doesn’t really need off-road capability
- SUV style over saloon for kids, prams and dog in boot.
- Range 250 Miles +
- Happy for business lease payment to be up to £1000pm ish.

What’s out there apart from a Model X or iPace?

We want to buy via the company to take advantage of capital allowance and 0/1/2% BIK rates, so would be looking at full EV, not a hybrid.

Anything on the horizon for EV X3’s, X5’s, Range Rovers etc?

You're a little early at the moment but next year (I would guess) there would be a few. Rumoured to be a Range Rover EV and there is the Rivian R1S.

When is the Tesla Model Y going to launch in the UK? That might suit.

If you want a real-world 250 mile range in poor conditions, it's pretty much Tesla, Tesla or Tesla at the moment in that market sector. The iPace gets pretty close, but it wont do 250 miles at motorway speeds in freezing weather; if you're happy with having to drive a bit slower in really cold weather to achieve that range it's probably worthy of consideration.

Other options... The Rivian R1S looks like it would fit the bill. I think it's meant to be out later this year, although models from new companies always have to be taken with a certain degree of scepticism until they actually appear. The Model-Y might do it, or it might be a bit small. Not sure about the Mustang Mach-E, but again I think it should be this year.

ETA: There's the BMW iX3 due pretty soon, too, although it might be marginal on range.


In 18 months time this market will be flooded with cars, but right now there's not really much choice.

Smaller and 190miles range so unlikely for you, but the new Lexus adverts are on billboards are all over the place currently.

BMW I next is coming but not the best looking (though on a video I watched it looked much better than in stills and maybe it will look better in metallic blue) and may be very expensive. iX3 is coming but rear wheel drive only. Nowt with 250 miles in winter - not ipace or merc EQC or Audi etron

Not sure if Rivian is actually coming to UK, or how much it will be - or when. Will perhaps be rather oversized for uk roads anyway?

I quite like the modern approach some are taking to these EVs, but BMW appear to have gone off the rails in my eyes!

I think the perfect car would be a EV Macan... Macan with the Taycan Turbo Guts and some more range would be lovely!

Just been looking at the upcoming Mustang (really) Mach E GT.

Looks like it’s coming later this year, could be reasonable.

Funky little thing, although too small by the looks of it. I think I am bit early to be fair - the next 12months should bring some interesting cars. I wonder whether its worth hanging on...

How about an MG ZS EV?



It's not as big or as "premium" as others discussed on this thread, but on the plus side, it's a helluva lot cheaper.

How often do you genuinely want to drive 250 miles without charging?

the iPace would be perfect otherwise, it's similarly roomy, faster and imo, rather better looking and probably a bit better to drive than your current X5?

As the fast charging network improves, charging occasionally is fast becoming a bit of a nothing-burger. yes it would be nice to be able to drive for 500 miles in one go, but if the advantages of the EV outweight that small dissadvantage then it could be a sensible choice. IME, as long as you can charge at home, you'll spend much LESS time refueling your car than you currently do, and being able to drive away in the morning with a full battery and a warm and defrosted (or cool and airconditioned!) car is a benfit you soon would not be without ! (5 year EV owner talking here :-)

250miles is just a number I plucked to be fair. I.e I want some flexibility as we travel about quite a bit in rural areas which currently have little to no infrastructure - but dont need 350+ long range Tesla models.

iPace. Not really doing it for me, spent a lot of time looking at them on AT last night.

If the ModelX is too big then wait for the ModelY or the Mustang SUV.

Tesla say 2022 for the Y in Europe, but it may come sooner to the UK because we're RHD and they are making those elsewhere.
