Currently have a Tesla Model 3P and although it is fast and ok to drive I would really prefer something that is better screwed together and also a hatchback. Signed up for a i4 M50 but have gone off the idea and cancelled as it is just too big and heavy.

What I really want is a Golf GTI sized car with an electric powertrain. I am aware that the ID3 GTX will be out next year and I am watching closely but the specs seem pretty underwhelming for what will undoubtedly be a high price.

Anything else that fits the bill? could probably wait another 18 months or so.

Mk7 Golf R but pure electric would be prefect.

Shame it’ll never be made, seeing as VW have completely lost the plot when it comes to car design.

Cupra Born, 228hp with eBoost. Not particularly powerful (by today's measures) but it's still a RWD hatchback which is somewhat unique in today's market.

1800kg and 228bhp seems pretty underwhelming coming from the Tesla M3P. Hell, even my old 1300kg 188bhp i3s is more impressive than that.

Even next years ID3 GTX has only the 300bhp compared to the near 500bhp of the Tesla. Seems odd that there is no real competition from a performance perspective even now.

If you're just going to play it by numbers then sure, not much is going to beat the M3P in that bracket. But then it's somewhat a one-trick pony in that regard.

I don't expect anything to beat it. I would be quite happy with something a league or two below but 7 second 0-60 compared to 3.1 sec 0-60 is more than a few rungs below.

Dual motor Polestar 2 with the Performance Pack? It’s a hatch and if mine is anything to go by, is very well screwed together. It’s a heavy car though, no getting away from that.

Cupra have said there will be a dual motor version of the Born at some point, as the current single motor version can be had with more power than the id.3 I suspect it will have a bit more shove than the id.3 GTX, but I doubt any manufacturers will be chasing Tesla P model levels of power in their smaller EVs anytime soon though, and anyway how often do people really use all the power of a Tesla P model on a day to day basis?

The Polestar, EQA and Audis are all just a bit too big.

The ID3 or Born are the ideal size and look perfectly packaged it is just the power trains that seem a bit lack lustre at the moment.

Not to mention the infotainment systems on the VWG offerings are horrendous

There really is a massive gap in the market for this kind of car, because I’d also like one!

Infotainment doesn't even register for me. So long as it can tune into radio stations that's all I care about.

I hate the bloated tech of the Tesla

I doubt there is much in it in terms of size. The EQA and Q4 are probably smaller than your Tesla?

My brother has an id.4 GTX (299 hp from it's dual motors), on the owners forums there is talk apparently (from people in the know) that the GTX models are going to get pushed up to 350hp at some point once VW are happy with how the motors and batteries are performingon them, tbh for a big car his GTX is already plenty quick, esp off the line due to AWD and has plenty of push for a big family hauler, more than you would really need on a day to day basis, handles surprisingly well as well (he also has an MX5 3.5 with Miester coil overs, RX8 anti roll bars, BBR SuperSport kit, sports cat on a nice stainless exhaust etc to compare it to).

It will in a VWG car when it’s crashing all the time and driving you round the bend! I.e. you won’t even be able to adjust the air con fan setting as it has frozen

My brother has been hassling VW about when his I’d.4 will get the V3 SW update as it fixes so many issues (he hasn’t had it actually lock up on him though) but scheduled charging basically doesn’t work on the current version and he’s on Octopus Go tariff so it’s pretty important to him…………

Just looked at both of those and they look like frumpy family cars - couldn't have one of those on the drive.
