We were on Houx and chatted to some other guys who had got their earlier (Tuesday/Weds). One of them had a load of glass bottled beers confiscated on entry, and the security staff were not willing to say whether or not he'd get them back on exit...

Personally we were not searched on arrival on Weds afternoon, but we'd already bought cans on the ferry.

My car was searched when driving into the circuit to access the TL campsite on Thursday evening, but it wasn't particularly thorough otherwise they'd have noticed the 12 cases of beer hidden under a rug!

We turned up at Houx on Wednesday afternoon with a caravan full of semi hidden bottles of Stella Cidre. We weren't searched or asked anything on the way in (or out) at anytime. We also went to Carrefour on Thursday morning and filled the Rangey with red wine and Chimay - all in glass and again, no problems.

There was security all week at BSJ. The guys in the Red jackets were checking the boots of nearly all the fresh arrivals, and then roughly 1 in 3 over the weekend, we had bottles of beer and wine in the boot, and they did not say a word about it when they checked our car, Never did work out what they were looking for????

If only the ACO and the supermarkets got their acts together and stocked up on cans rather than bottles then it would be a non-issue at I'm sure 90% of the booze drunk comes from either the ACO sellers or the local supermarkets.

Yeap, this seems to be a complete b-llsh-t story...
If you still have it, read the back of your ticket:

Ticket said:
...any person caught entering or attempting to enter the site in possesion of an object likely to be construed as a weapon, or likely to cause injury, including glass bottles, is liable to 3 years imprisonment and a fine of 15245€.
Don't know if that has been there in previous years, but I haven't noticed it before.
I didn't even notice it this year. Who reads the back of the tickets? Only saw this thread today, so was unaware of the bottle ban. If I had known, I wouldn't have carried some bottles in with me to drink in the grandstand.

Sounds like yet another good reason to camp away from the circuit!

We arrived at Houx on Tuesday PM. No security there, only the ticket checkers, so no search.

We later asked at the gate of Houx and were told no bottles allowed.
So it seems we have all been flouting the rules for many years, as has been said before.

We had some bottles with us on arrival, but decided to top up with cans up at the Super U.
Those 5ltr can are great! Don't last long though! smile

It was very clear to me that a lot of sensible Brits were doing the same, and others were at least keeping empty glass bottles well hidden, and as such the mess on Houx was much lower this year!

The reusable plastic ECO-CUP you get at the bars I think are a great idea.
I can remember the mess of plastic throw away cups a couple of years ago, and this year it was so much better.

Apart from the dust storm that appeared after the Razorste concert!
From Dunlop all the way down to Tertre Rouge it was terrible.

So I's say well done lads for keeping it cleaner, SAFER and so more enjoyable.

I guess like it or loathe it, alcohol ban might be the future. The local mayor (or equivalent) tried to enforce this on the Monday and it was overturned by the ACO. Then everyone in security was in a mess for 2 days trying to interpret what is good or bad.

Sounds like an unworkable compromise was placed in - that was allowing alcohol but no bottles. As per usual from that country, not well thought through and how would it work logistically without causing chaos ? So it seems it was sort of enforced in the early part of the week but once the crowds started arriving, it was never going to work.

It is interesting though that there is a 13 page thread on this "bluff" that the authorities put up - although, initially, they were sincere and carrying it through. The cheeky side of me wonders if this was a bit of scaremongering so that you wouldn't purchase loads of bottles with the potential for it to be conviscated at the gate. I don't know whether any of you did take that precaution - if you did, perhaps the authorities got their way a little.

The only way to do this properly is to have the all or nothing policy. I fear the latter in the years to come.

Thing is, a total ban would never work. The ACO make money from the various franchises selling alcohol inside the circuit. Corporate hospitality make a big thing of it. A campsite ban would be unenforceable just as it was this year. To be honest, I like the fact I can have a beer or wine with my meal.

We all bemoan the chav element, and Le Mans (ACO and local mayor) are trying in their own Gallic way to address the chavs.

On a side note, I was heading out of Houx on Friday night around 1930 and saw a bloke being 'guided' back to the entrance by two of his mates. At first I thought he was injured/disabled. I was half right he was clearly disabled through drink. I can honestly say that I haven't seen anyone that pissed in a long long time and I run a taxi company.

What spelling mistake?

There's a fking beer ban at Le Mans and you're worried about someone's fking spelling? Yeesh! You steaming great big homosexual puff, go back to sipping port and lemon.
What an di*khead of a reply to a post.

To the normal people, it has been there on the tickets for the last 2 years.

Not really, I know I saw this thread the day before we left and was frantically reading to find out what the story was - a useless post from some adenoidal grammar Nazi just gets in the way.

This is one of the guys in our group. We had the same stickers on the side of our car and a few clearly visible crates of beer in the back and they had a quick look in and around the car and waved us on, this was on Beausejour btw.

I suspect that for next year there will be a ban on glass bottles of less than 70cl. Anyone in breach of this regulation is liable to have their pass removed and be escorted to the nearest exit.

The reality being that Security will enforce and, as with most rules where there is no imminent danger, people will be warned and advised unless they fail the attitude test or are taking the P.

Whilst you could say the 25cl stubby is part of the fabric of LM so were straw bales and we've move a little beyond that.

"Oh no, what about our bottles of Old Jack's Dirty Masterfister IPA" I hear you call. The French will shrug their shoulders and treat the same as a 25cl stubby - Real Ale drinkers are like 993 owners to the French, they just don't understand them as a rule

I'll repeat what I said earlier for all those posting that a ban would be "unworkable" and "impossible to police" and that the ACO couldn't afford the knock in revenue by banning alcohol on site.

THEY ALREADY DO IT

For a 48hr period (it used to be April but has moved to August this year) for the bike 24hr race they do not sell alcohol ANYWHERE in Le Mans or the surrounding area, no bars, restaurants, Carrefour, supermarkets, anywhere, and the on site security will confiscate it (if they feel they can) anywhere on site. It's been like it for years and has cut spectator fatalities due to drunks riding superbikes round the campsites.

I found this particular story to be absolute bkS. We were in MB and nothing, no searches, no patrols, nothing. Same as every year previously!
