Planning for 2018

I'm just starting to think about plans for next year and thought we might go a week earlier to take in scrutineering the weekend before the race. We will probably camp on one of the private sites on circuit but I think most of these don't open until the Wednesday before the race. Is this correct? Are there any camping facilities around le mans close to the tram line ? or am I looking for a hotel for a few nights until the campsites open?

I was thinking of doing the same. I wonder if you can just turn up at your camp site a few days early and pitch a tent or whether those areas a fenced off?

If it were me, I'd look for a hotel or airbnb in town for scrutineering. Everything before practise on Wednesday is based in town so you might as well base yourself there too then move to a campsite Wednesday morning.

We did this in '16. Was great fun and really missed doing it this year. When we went in '16 we booked a cheap hotel only a few weeks before, i think it was the hotel premierre classe up by the university. If you look early enough there are plenty of cheap hotels that you can get up until the Tuesday then start camping from then. From what we've seen most of the sites are pretty active from the Tuesday but never tried earlier and would worry they may not let you.

Public sites are open from the Sunday, when I was looking for somewhere to stay on the Saturday before the race this year I found a British run campsite on the web, somewhere just north of Le Mans, can't for the life of me find it now though, which isn't very helpful.

Accommodation booked for the next 2 years but still a bit unsure about scrutineering, although I expect it's a lot more relaxed.
