Since then, it has been a box of wine with the bag taken out and placed into a rucksack. As they are looking for bottles, this has worked very nicely.
Wine from a box... how uncivilized!
Even though this topic is about the campsite alcohol situation, it's worth noting that the blanket ban on glass bottles at the circuit (including checkpoints between campsites and GE areas) has been in place a few years.Wine from a box... how uncivilized!
The above is the solution that our team have been doing, and we can confirm that it works well.
We have been going for years and cans of beer / mixed drinks and boxed wine have NEVER been an issue. All they are doing is protecting the safety of us race goers and those taking part. Glass is not permitted for very good reasons as it only takes one lout to lob a bottle onto the circuit after a few too many. If you must take wine in a glass bottle, then hide it or expect it to be taken if searched.
Well, it's not just glass, we tried cans of Heineken, bought from the Super U. Note, the SuperU has started stocking a lot more cans in their special Beer promotion area, right by the door.
The guards were turning away many of us, trying to leave Houx while entering the circuit. So it's not safety, it's revenue protection. This happened in 2016 and 2017.

We've been stopped for taking cans onto the circuit from the campsite in the past, so I wouldn't rely on this.FredericRobinson said:
Remember, you're dealing with the French, there will be lots of rules but a totally shambolic enforcement of them, if you don't get the response you want from someone, try someone else

literally the best explanation of Le Mans I've ever heard, perfectly summed up in 2 lines!!Would it help if one of us is French or does it just depend on the person who is in charge of entry?

First off, unless you're a barely functional alcoholic it's really not as stressful as some people make it out. Subject to early week security staff miss-communication you should be able to take at least non-glass alcohol in to any camp site, so it's only when you're track side that you might have to buy ACO beer (/Guinness/Champagne).Would it help if one of us is French or does it just depend on the person who is in charge of entry?
To address your question though, it's the latter. Walk up to one security gate and have your bag checked by one member of security staff and they will stop you due to glass/alcohol/camping gas bottles/type of cheese/length of headphone lead. Walk away from that gate and along to the next/try the same gate after a shift change and have your bag searched by another member of staff and they will wave you through.

Couldn't agree more. The camping attendants are my favourites.Ludicrous officiousness about escorting you direct to your pitches, then zero f*cks given when people just decide to swap for another pitch.
