At last another team other than Toyota wins! Bring on LM24 and the high speed straights suiting Rebellion et al.

It's a shame they were so severely limited to make other LMP1 cars competitive. Good to see a non-Toyota win on the track though (as opposed to stewards office).

With a bigger field at Le Mans and much more overtaking over the longer race the Toyota hybrid advantage on straights after slow corners or chicanes will be even harder to combat.

Having Toyotas only just faster than GTE Pro and much slower than LMP2 and LMP1 non-hybrid (30kph faster on long straights).

Not keen on new 4 hour races - especially with 3 driver cars

The success penalties which the WEC has brought in this season, don't apply at Le Mans.
Even though I dislike the idea they did make for an interesting race.

That's good as avoids teams throwing a couple before.

It's not good when you have overtaken lapped cars (LMP2 etc) routinely catching up and easily reversing the overtake at the end of the straight especially when other cars on lead/same lap in the mix.

Can anyone explain to me why a gap of 1m 36s between the slowest Toyota and the fastest non-Toyota LMP1 after 4hrs of racing at Silverstone is all good and proper but a 1m 7s gap between the fastest non-Toyota LMP1 and the fastest Toyota after 4hrs of racing at Shanghai is 'artificial'?

That seemed to be the view of the Eurosport commentators, but personally I thought it was a great race and Toyota just getting the run of double success ballast happening to hit them on a circuit that naturally favoured the non-hybrids. Had Silverstone and Shanghai been swapped I think zero ballest Toyotas would have won the Shanghai opener, still won Fuji, then gone on to win Silverstone even with double success ballast, as the circuit is better suited to the hybrids than the non.

The Bahrain circuit should be good for the non-hybrids too - but of course the Rebellion will be getting a healthy performance hit as a result of yesterday's win.

Success ballast is artificial, the fastest sports car the world has ever seen has been handicapped to a level where the P2s were breezing past it on the straight. It did make for an interesting race though.
Seeing as you mentioned the Eurosport commentary, I think that was the worst I've encountered watching any sport ever, reaching a particular low when the penalty was imposed on the Ginettas and Toyota for the incorrect start, which they didn't notice for a while, and once they did notice that the crucial event of the race was going on there was a comment of 'ooo, drama' followed by a discussion of floods in Barnsley.

Is success ballest really any more or less artificial than explicitly writing advantages in to the LMP1 regulations at the request of the big motor manufacturers to prevent smaller teams who can't afford to spend millions on hybrid systems beating them?

And if you don't like your top formula being slower than today's LMP2 cars you're going to hate 'hypercar' by the looks of it. Those cars will be slower than current LMP2s so LMPs2 will be slowed. Is that not creating an artifical gap between LMP1 and 2?

Eurosport commentators were talking about flooding in the midlands. No very good at remembering how many collisions etc and often miss obvious happenings on track.

No commercial breaks for ages after the start and then they schedule it for the pitstops.

Virtually no coverage of GTE Am - think the TF Sport car leading category wasn't shown for first 90 or so minutes.

Seemed to pack 2nd half of race with breaks - plugging Eurosport stuff at 6.30am.

I think it's perfectly possible to have a top class doing 3.30 laps that look and sound exciting and produce a good battle, let's hope that's how it works out
