I'm after a 5 door hatchback that can deal with a 3 year old, plus offer a bit of fun.

I'd never heard of the MKV TSI GT until I starter looking at GTI's a month or so ago (I have a history of hot-hatches, have owned a MK1 GTI and 205 GTI)

There seems to be more of the 1.4's about compared to the GTI, I guess they were more common?
The engine is more complicated than the GTI, but is it known to be weak? I'm tempted by the idea of owning a supercharged and torbo'd engine, it's basically a Lancia S4 smile

Looking up to 6k, what are the downsides?

I killed the engine in a twin-charged Mk6 TSI. Apparently, early lumps run very lean and have been known to detonate. The bill to fix was several grand, fortunately picked up by the warranty.

I was tempted by one of these for my wife's daily. A short chat with my local VW specialist was enough to put me off.

The engine is far too complex to run out of warranty IMHO.

I'd look at a Civic 1.8 for £6000.

I thought it might be too good to be true!

Thanks anyway, potentially going to see an A3 2.0 TFSI tomorrow instead.

I had a 2009 scirocco with the same engine in 160hp tune from new. It went pop after about 12000 properly serviced miles and needed a new engine.

It was really nice until then though.

My son had one from new with the 170 hp twin charge unit, it was a disaster, within 6k miles it was drinking oil at an unbelievable rate and it melted down circa 9k miles. Avoid smile

Quite amazing that we've now had 3 posts about self-destructing twin-charged TSI lumps!

It's a great engine and works really well with DSG. But I had problems with both in a sub 20k mile car.

Is it not the same engine as the Golf GTI of the same age?

It is but nearly all vag 2.0 tfsi engines are known to drink oil, some more than others.

The Golf will bore you no end. Look at a Leon 225 or maybe a Subaru? BMW 130i, Focus ST or maybe a Mazda 3 MPS. You can do much better for 6k.
