Am I nuts to think that a Skoda Kodiaq is the ideal family car?

I'm not planning on buying a new one now but in two years. I've got two kids, a wife and a dog and I've got a large collection of bicycles that I transport occasionally.

The youngest child's only 5 months but in two years I can see that I might need to transport the eldest (he'll be 9 by then) and his friends to places. Go on camping trips etc etc.

Currently I've got an m140i and a seat exeo estate. The m140i is on lease and will be going back and I was thinking of having the seat back off my wife and getting a two year old 7 seat kodiaq. Good plan/bad plan??

Can't fault your plan, to be fair.

If you need such an enormous car, it's probably a decent bet. Personally I think I'd prefer a Superb estate unless I actually needed the extra ground clearance.

ETA: Ah, just realised the Kodiaq is available with seven seats, which adds an extra dimension to it I suppose.

It's claiming the XC90's spot now the Volvo is getting pricey. I expect I'll get one at some point. Hopeful!y the petrols are popular.

Superb estate is longer than the Kodiaq.

Its the seven seats that swings it. If somehow the Superb had seven seats I'd get that. My dad has a Superb for private hire work and it's amazing - leg room in the back is incredible and it's really very nice

I drove one the other day - really lovely car, drove the manual petrol version - and yes it would make an ideal family car - like any other similar 7 seater though, not much room with all 7 seats in use...

I think we'd only use the 7 seats when transporting friends kids. So when you were moving stuff they'd be folded down.

Going next week to look at one as a replacement for our Volvo XC90.and yes the new XC90 is wonderful but a new basic model is nearly twice as much as I paid for ours seven years ago.

I had an order in for one but cancelled it because I decided we could manage a few months longer with a smaller car and wanted to see one properly (not just a quick look at the motorshow car with half the population of Zurich leaning over my shoulder).

Having seen one in the flesh I can't fault it, and as it's pretty much the only sensibly priced seven seater available with a petrol engine, 4x4 and an automatic gearbox I expect we'll have one in the garage in the next 6-9 months.

I've still not seen one on the roads. Seen loads of the new Discoverys (the full size one), but no Kodiaqs.

The Kodiaq looks like a great buy and I think will be the car that enables Skoda to throw off any final lingering issues associated with 'old Skoda'.

However, in terms of dimensions it is definitely a big Tiguan rather than XC90 size.

Tiguan - 4486mm
Kodiaq - 4697mm
Touareg - 4801mm
XC90 - 4950mm
Discovery - 4970mm

I sat in one yesterday at our local Skoda dealership and thought it was a great car - a real quality product. I don't think you could go wrong with one of these.

It looks great in the metal, even in lower spec models. The interior felt far more expensive than the list price would suggest - there was a genuine air of quality, and the fit and finish felt first rate. Central infotainment screen is large and looks really crisp.

It's not as big in real life as I thought it would be, but perhaps that's no bad thing - it still felt incredibly spacious inside, although it looked like the third row seating would be a little tight.

Very interested in one of these, or maybe the VW or SEAT versions which are apparently coming too. My missus has one of the last of the previous Tiguans - she loves it for everyday use, but it can be a bit embarrassing that things you'd think should fit easily into an SUV are a struggle, and sometimes impossible if the kids car-seats are in place, or I haven't thought to leave the load cover at home.

I’m on the verge of selling my vw golf and getting one of these as I need a nice family car. Anyone had 1st hand experience of owning and running one of these?

The VW is already out, badged Tiguan Allspace. The SEAT is coming early next year I believe, badged Tarraco.

FWIW we have the smaller Karoq as our family car in petrol 1.5 SEL spec. Delivered end of May and immediately driven 1100 miles to Scotland and back on holiday. It’s not very PH but for family duties vs value for money it’s bloody brilliant. As said above, the fit and finish is excellent as is the build quality and if the Kodiaq drives anything like the Karoq, then I’m sure you’ll be very happy with it.

I'd say unless you need 7 seats the the Ford Edge for me is the ideal vehicle.
