I've got one, a DSG estate with zero options as its fine as it comes, bar Sat Nav.

The only option I considered was metallic but that added 12.5% per month to the cost so just wasn't worth it. To me, it's just a 2 year rental car to do 24k miles in to/from work and cheaper than the the Match diesel at the time.......

If I was buying a used one though (I wouldn't having owned one) I'd be picky too and want all the options LOL

Same here - mine went back last year. Red with no options, most R's were on lease at the time from what I understand and options add a disproportionate ammount to the monthly payment. Silly of the manufacturer really, if they allowed a bit more % of residual retained and this was reflected in the payment, they would sell more options and have a lot less bog standard vehicles on their forecourt, which they could then sell at a premium come second owner time,

Most options don't add anything to the residiual value though. Yes a winter pack (or whatever) may make the car more desirable, but you wouldn't pay much if anything more than a car without it. Hence all the lease cars coming back without any options on

Article on good used buys in this months Car magazine discussed exactly this on buying a used Golf R. Though I'm not looking for one I do look on AT at them & wholeheartedly agree with their thoughts;

'Looking for a used one with one option is a pain, looking for one with the exact options you want is like chasing a unicorn'!

I have the standard nav in my MK7 & though I like that it gives you directions on the centre of the dash it's not great & the traffic function is useless. CarPlay with your smart phone is much better.

I think this is partly why all MK7 Golf R's from about May 2016 onwards came with Nav & Winter pack as standard.

I don't understand the whole "The R has no heritage, so I pay nearly as much for a 70hp less GTI because pestige." The golf R is better. It is. It doesn't matter than the GTI has history, or that's it's a pure-breed etc. The golf R is better than the GTI.

And I have a cupra 290 black, so this isn't an AWD compared to FWD argument. The cupra has no heritage, but it will leave a GTI for dead. That's all that matters with a car like this. If you want heritage, buy an old GTI, the new ones are devoid of any of the features of the 'heritage' owners drone on about. It reeks of "I don't have an R, so I'm going to justify myself constantly why I didn't WANT one." It's as bad as the shed owners that drive about in a 2002 leaky car because "New cars have no personality and I hate them."

The GTI is a great car. It's lovely. But it's a step down from the R. At one point the GTI had no heritage. It smells a lot of people just wanting to go against the grain because the R was so astronomically popular with the lease deals. I would have either another cupra, gti, gtd or an R, they're all great; but some more than others.

I own an R and think its fantastic. I don't understand how people can judge the car having never driven it. I personally LOVE mine.

I even looked at changing from an R to a GTI as I wanted to improve on economy but real world theres was hardly any noticeable difference plus the GTI just isn't as good. Sorry!

agreed - I have one on order - a lease with zero options and white paint.

Its 2 years I have the car - a lot of the reviews say the new super dooper screen is good but the gesture control isn't all that and its all touch screen rather than a few buttons on the side.

Why would I pay say £1000 for sat nav unit I will use for two years and then give the car back - a tom tom is far better - or google maps.

If you want options go PCP or buy out right. I certainly wouldn't want to buy a demo.

Sat-nav in cars has to be just about the biggest waste of cash out there. They're all dogst, nothing is as good as Waze.

Have to agree. Driven plenty of the latest VW's with the Discover Nav and the Pro Nav and it did nothing but annoy me. I always reverted back to Waze. Happy that I didn't bother paying any extra for it in my R.

poor spec..

Radar guided cruise,
Folding mirrors
heated mirrors
electric windows front and back
auto hold
dimming rear view mirror
auto lights
auto wipers
Touch screen media with USB/SD (car play in 2015?)
DRL
HID headlights
LED brake lights/indicators interior lighting
Mood lighting

I see your point.I mean that's pretty much a flintstone car, right? laugh

Most of that has been around on many cars for 10 years, cars that cost less than the R.

and how many of them also have 300 bhp, 4 wheel drive and a dual clutch DSG box. and a sub 5 second 0-60 and under 20k miles average?

a used R is a performance bargain with a nice bit of standard kit too smile

If I'm not mistaken, the R comes with the Discover navigation system as standard.

If I am mistaken, as you were.

That is just a sign of the times, all those spec bits you listed are basic, and nothing new.

I personally think its a total chav chariot that has been cheapened beyond belief by the lease deals, but there we are.

The big problem with Discover Nav is the lack of traffic flow info - I guess VW wants people to subscribe to Car-Net to get it. The basic routing seems OK, although it offers three choices and colours them Red, Orange and Blue. Might just be my eyes but I can't tell the difference between the Red and Orange colours, and Blue is hard to pick out as motorways are the same colour!

Upgrade to Nav Pro cost seems insane for what you get, although I believe on Golf it was often offered cheaper and with upgraded audio included.
