Oh okay the Merc's in particular have bulletproof auto boxes (as long as you change the fluids & filters every 40k) so I wouldn't rule them out.

To be honest I'd probably look at the cars on the first list more so than this one but it's personal preference, from this list I'd be looking at the E220 or the Insignia Elite.

With the exception of the 508 I've towed with all of these and the E39 530d is far superior. There is a nice one with a manual box on ebay at the moment. The manual gearbox is incredibly strong, good for a 500lbft remap!

I've towed with a good few cars and an e39 530d touring is where it's at, best by miles in my opinion. Tows up to 2 tonnes as well.

Bit tricky to find these days though.
