Hi ho ho - hubby's upgrading our AA membership as we speak. It just made the round trip to the local Indian without a single warning light coming on. Might make it to Sainsburys tomorrow without incident, then...

Touareg good shout. 4/5 car in every department. Commanding drive like the Land Rover and remember these were built to be the best 4x4's. Only car I've owned for over 3 years. Also had Disco 3 and now run a Disco 4.
The Vw is a Tough car. V10 or V8 if fuel cost not issue although personally I would find a well maintained 3.0tdi. Can tow 3500kg. Only 2 main issues on these, get the propshaft bearings changed every <70K and if the gearbox clunks between 4/5th then avoid or budget in £1-£2K fix.

RR or RRS will be more of a minefield, although a tidy low spec Disco 3 will be worth considering. The 2.7TDi is a peach of an engine its sloooowww in 2.5ton Disco.

My Sport is on the same chassis as the Disco 3. I refer to it as a Disco in a mini-skirt.

A Disco is not a complicated motor. Not quite 'take it apart with a Swiss Army knife' but fairly close. If you have a decent mechanic then find a good Disco with history and you're on your way.
Another vote for Disco. I echo the above entirely, its not going to be as reliable as its Japanese competitors but tow better than anything else on the road, are fairly easy to work on & depending where you live there tends to be a lot of local knowledge among backstreet mechanics about their faults and inner workings.

Or you know, there is always the Defender if you hate yourself! biggrin

EDIT: Just read your last post, congratulations, Im tempted by a Disco 2 myself with a 10th of your budget, but my heart is set on a Defender 90... because I hate being comfortable.
