Hello everyone,

So at some point I want to swap my car to a petrol with a little more grunt, currently have a 2004 Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDI estate, I'm 32 with no points and a minor accident on my record still, if some rough insight on tax cost, insurance cost and maintenance costs on any of the cars listed it'd be very appreciated.

Need a compromise between performance, driving enjoyment, boot space, decent economy for a petrol, lower end spectrum of road tax and insurance, reliable, easy and cheap to repair/service...

All advice welcome!

Been looking at used:

Subaru Legacy of some sort

Skoda Octavia VRS

Audi A4 or A6

Honda Accord

Mitsubishi Galant

Volkswagon Passat

I'm stuck as the driver in me leans toward the legacy but my sensible side is siding with another octavia.

Cheers

Surprised there are no BMWs on your list?

You missed one which is the Mondeo depending on how much you want to spend then the 2.5 or 2.0 Ecoboost are the ones to look for plus it's the best FWD steer.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far, does anyone have any experience of the cars I'd listed?

Well I have had a 2.2 diesel Accord Tourer for the last 9 years. I know you are not looking for a diesel but it has been the best estate car that I have owned by a country mile ( and I'm well into my fifty's !).
It's not exactly a bundle of laughs to drive but for build quality, reliability, comfort, fuel economy and size of boot , it has been superb.
The car is 10 years old now but you wouldn't know it. No squeaks, rattles etc and the engine seems as good as new although it has only done 80k miles.
I have heard that the petrol versions are potentially even more reliable although you won't get anything like the fuel economy.

Definitely try a Beemer and a Mondeo.

Fair enough if you then decide they are still not for you.

Mondeo is excellent value and good to drive.

Beemers are more expensive but drive really well IMO.

What's your budget?

This thread was done not so long ago, Like Redchaz I have a 56 plate 2.2 Cdi Accord EX Tourer, fully loaded and same report as him. Reliable apart from exhaust manifold and one sticky brake calliper. I want to change to Petrol and am considering a 2.4 manual (if they did them same shape Accord) or a 2.4 manual of the last shape ones. Don't want a diesel one the pdf is bound to fail, the previous generation doesn't have one. I get an easy 45mpg on a 70mph motorway trip maybe more.

They have great space in them and as I said the EX's have pretty much every extra you could want (the rear looks take some getting used to, but I like them).

Have considered E or C Class Estates, but they will be the same age or older and I do worry about reliability hence sticking with Honda.

If you fancy another Skoda, what about a Fabia Mk2 vRS in estate form?

Very decent boot space without being massive on the road.
