Why get him a really crap car?
Why not get him the best you can for the money you want to spend?

Seems a little harsh to want to buy a 17 year old his first car, but make it deliberately ste. Your first car is an important "rite of passage" moment, well it was for me anyway. The moment you truly feel you've been accepted in the adult world, because you can drive your own car wherever you like. Seems a shame to spoil that with a deliberately ste car, but maybe that's just me.

Honda Jazz, if he sees past the joke, it'll be a very useful reliable and practical car for him. I've seen roadworthy examples for sale at less than £200. They're ultra reliable, cheap to run , cheap to insure, and actually drive reasonably well.

To further the case for the Rialto......
Its a traditional British marque with plenty of history.
The Group-B connection.
Save money on rubber as you only need to buy three.
The lolz.

If you can't find a brown Ital, Marina or a beige Allegro.

Hyundai Atoz?

Ultimate in cack.

Some of the others mentioned in here are good cars - not really such thing as a "crap" Astra to be honest, especially the Astra F.

If you want a 'crap' Astra, you need the Daewoo Nexia

The problem with small cars is no matter how appalling, they risk going unnoticed. You want to go for something with a bit of presence...

The problem with crap cars is that the insurance is higher because you might not be so careful and more likely to have an collision with another insured driver. Get a good car and you might be more careful so lower premiums.

I suspect cheap insurance on something like this.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/volvo-v-40-diesel-estate...

Not really a st car, just an old banged about one with decent safety kit, and very useful.

Saw one of these the other day, badge says Dihatsu!

Everywhere out here, loosely based on a mini in design and looks like an old Micra!

Not too common in the UK though, oh and 0.6 or 1.0 automatic!

My thoughts as well. The whole reason i started thinking about getting him a car was i was telling him how high his insurance would be if he gets something like a fiesta. he needs something a bit left field i think to lower the cost.

Put it this way, how many 17 year olds make a claim while driving their fiat multipa hehe
