51 Clio 172 as a daily run around
Discussion
HI,
I have the option of a 51 plate clio 172 for about a grand. There doesn't seem to be much wrong with it. I will be doing short commutes, 3 miles each way with the odd longer trip at weekends.
Has anyone lived with one as a daily driver and how do they do? Is there anything i need to be aware of?
cheers
Rich

Had a 182 and such a short commute would be perfectly comfortable. TO be fair you could commute that distance in an Atom quite easily.
Lots of things to look for going wrong (buyers guides aplenty on the web) but if it's a commute with a roundabout or two then be aware that the urge to play will be too tempting to resist - they are pretty amusing.

can't afford an Atom unfortunately.Lots of things to look for going wrong (buyers guides aplenty on the web) but if it's a commute with a roundabout or two then be aware that the urge to play will be too tempting to resist - they are pretty amusing.
There is a roundabout on the way in - 90 right at 30 should be easy enough, my Disco 2 did it :-)

well I've got my hands on it for a week or so to see if it fits what i want...
it's done 115,600
things so far,
radio reception pretty bad.
tickover is 'lumpy' when warmed up a little bit - is this normal?
is there anything i should particularly look for?
cheers
Rich
All sounds normal, had my 172 Cup for over 7yrs & love it, great on 1.5ml commute.it's done 115,600

As mentioned, belts are the biggie on these, costing £600-800, need doing every 5yrs I think.
If the cars done 115k mls then most things have probably been done or it's just a good un, buy it & enjoy it (as long as you get on with the driving position). Has the steering wheel melted by the way?

driving position doesn't seem to bad, what do people normally have an issue with?
it's a shame it's all stop start commute, but at least i could wander out at weekends...
I don't have an issue with it either, some do & of course, they're the ones who tend to post on forums! it's a shame it's all stop start commute, but at least i could wander out at weekends...
They really are great little cars, I have no need for mine any longer but can't bring myself to sell it!
You would be able to smell gearbox oil - it stinks like cat pee, and be thick to the touch.
Brake fluid would look clear, but be very thin to the touch, as would hydraulic clutch fluid (which is the same).
Other than that, you've got coolant (slimy, sweet smelling) , washer fluid or maybe a drain point from the a/c condenser?
Sounds like a good little car, and at the end of the day, you've only got a grand to lose. I wish they made a 5 dr version of the 172/182..

light coloured & greasy (like cooking oil )
I'm a complete diy tinkerer. However, my Alfa 156 had a light, greasy oil drops forming on the bottom of the gearbox. A few days later, the clutch went soft, which I presume was the clutch slave cylinder leaking.I did forget completely about power steering fluid, which you might want to check out, as given the location, could point to a leak from the steering rack?
