£30k could get you into a used RS3, don't dismiss an auto either IMHO, modern autos are sublime...good luck whatever you decide.

ETA my son just bought a low mileage M135i for under £20k, not bad for a BMWbiggrin

The Jag still has a whiff of golf club about it.

Absolutely

While the RS is a bit council
The 140i is very bland
Megan's RS looks pretty cool
Civic TR shell suit time with back turned base ball cap
Golf R that's a bit golf club
Leon 300 a budget Golf

But the best bit about cars is you but whatever the fk you want (even a PT cruiser...) if you like it. Who cares what anyone else does or doesn't think. Unless your trying to buy an investment classic & OP has discounted the DB7 so it's modern depreciating vehicles.

Oh, I agree. The image wouldn't bother me, but it might bother the new hot hatch buyer. Who might also be bothered about practicality.

The RS isn't council, though, it's blue collar business owner, as is the Civic. If he were 20 years older, he'd have the Jag and his son would have the Seat. The Golf is for his accountant and the Audi is for his IFA. laugh

1 series is too bland, same with the Golf really. To the average person off the street there's no real discernable difference vs your run of the mill version.

Civic Type R for the bonkers look
Megane RS if you were going to do track days
Focus RS for everyday duties

Out of those, it'd have to be the Focus for me smile

Is there a particular reason why you want a hatchback? I know a preposterously wealthy man who drives a Mini JCW as parking at his offices is tight. For driving fast, something a bit bigger is usually a bit more stable. You can get into an M4 for 35k that'll st all over your mates hatchbacks..
I'm not suggesting anything potentially ancient and ruinous like I'd be tempted to gamble on, just saying that if you'll consider an M140i then the M4 isnt going to cost that much more to run. Slightly bigger tyres, and a bit more on fuel, yes, but it's still a turbo'd 3 litre 6 pot. You can get reasonable consumption from them when driven sensibly.

Not a bad shout. He could have either a cabrio or coupe for his money. They are well reviewed.. my brother is considering one. Personally not my thing, especially when you can get a manual 340i M Sport for £32k pre registered, but they are very different cars.

i think the mustang may hold its value better, the problem with bmws now a days they are ten a penny, and it is hard to tell a derv from a decent one.

As a Mustang GT owner it's a bit of a different proposition to a hot hatch. My girlfriend ordered a Seat Leon Cupra 300 SC on the great lease deal they're doing today (£249 1+23). I'm quite looking forward to driving it, she drives a fiesta ST at the moment and it's nice to get out of the mustang (a fantastic car for the money) and into something a bit more nimble every now and then. That V8 though, masterpiece.

Interesting input. I'd go for the Cupra over the Golf R as I think 2wd is generally more interesting. The 140i sounds more fun, but there is no denying the fun/hairyness that 300bhp through the front wheels would bring. Probably more of a handful to live with day to day.

PH Answer:
249 a month for a Cupra 300 for two years (6kish) and the other 24 on something special.

+1

Just done a deal on a manual 5 door metallic Cupra for £259pm for 10k miles - even with the admin fee it works out at £266/month over 2 years...absolute bargain!

The Cupra is brilliant. I have 350 bhp going through the front wheels of my 280 (PS4S tyres and a £25 torque arm bush the only suspension mods) and it's brilliant fun with no grip issues. I was in the market for a M135i but sometimes cars surprise you!

Depends what you want out of a car. For me, I want something that will take me, the Mrs, the dog and a couple of bikes, plus be able to fit the shopping in and the occasional extra couple of people.

I wouldn't be buying it for bragging rights with my mates, I grew out of the whole 'mines better than yours' a long time ago.

If you can get past the looks then the FK8 Type R, judging by the reviews it seems to be the most fun and best handling new hot hatch

I currently have a similar dilemma with a lesser budget(20-25k) atm I have a mk7 GTi which has been great so current favourite is the R.

Only real contender is the M140 as you can get some pretty good PCP deals on the shadow version.

30k will get you Masarati Grantourismo ;-)

The M140i hands down, it sounds fantastic and is absolutely rapid!
