I keep reading these threads on here - where the hell does a 20 year old get ten grand for a car? Ten grand from parents for a house deposit that gets spent on a car, maybe
OK baited

At 19 I purchased a hot hatch for £10K. Was on £120 per week. Saved half the deposit and went into the bank for a loan.

Can be done if living at home and not smoking, gambling or drinking it away.
There was this young boy in my old workplace who had a very new golf that he was paying monthly on. odd i thought as he was on apprentice wages but then had to quit and go on disability. typical urban/london type of lad. wanted to use his golf to lure the women in. IMO i thought he was odd as he didn't drink when going out to a bar/club. who goes to a club sober.. eesh.

As above

At 20 I was in full time employment on 34k a year and that was in the mid nineties and I bought a 205 GTi cash at £11k,

Why does everyone assume its always funded by mum and dad, some seriously sour and bitter people on here sometimes.
Earning £34k a year at 20 years old in the 1990's?.... Working for mummy and daddy's firm?

Wow - want some ketchup with that? Could quite easily have been be working in the City, or be a sales person with a good commission selling cars, photocopyers, houses, double glazing etc. etc...

Even if he was working for his parents, so what? Lottery of life applies and it's a hiding to nothing being so resentful. What was he supposed to do? Work for free and ride a bicycle for fear of making a random stranger jealous?

Don't talk st, no 20 year old, then or now, could be earning £34k a year or the current equivalent, without some huge advantage in life courtesy of mummy and daddy.

You're honestly trying to say that a 'normal' kid from a 'normal' comprehensive school, working class background could go out and independently get a job to earn that kind of money... not a chance.

Nothing wrong with the ''lottery of life'' as long as those that have won it are honest enough to admit it rather trying to say they earned it on merit through pure hard work or intellect.

What complete ste, plenty of jobs pay large salaries to people of a young age, for example app developers/game designers plus other IT roles, commission based sales roles, self employed company directors, plenty with no "advantages" from parents, not every 20 year old is making the tea or sponging off mum and dad, you really do have an odd view of the world.

Mike was clearly the school dropout who never succeeded in life and likes to put the downers on anyone else's success.
When you collect your next Giro, you can put the deposit down on your financed car.

See I can make assumptions too, not nice is it!

Interesting thread to read through as a 21 year old making good money and wanting to waste it all on a stupid car.

I went to a normal comprehensive school and didn't go to university. Instead I continued to develop the skills I had already developed in the social media world and got myself a job in a niche field. Funnily enough my parents still don't understand what YouTube is, so no help from them here! 2 years of low pay later and now I am earning well for my age.

I own a classic mini which I recently had restored and I am now looking to buy a Lotus Elise as a fun 'euro trip' car (111R or 111S?).

Rather than paying rent to my parents I actually help them pay for large ticket items that they wouldn't be able to pay for otherwise. I also treated them to a holiday this year as they hadn't been abroad for nearly 10 years.

I am fortunate to be able to still live at home but barring that I started my bank account with £120 my Grandad gave me for helping them around their garden one summer.

These forums are meant to be about our love for cars and everything related. If a younger guy came up to you at a track day or autojumble asking about cars within a certain price range you wouldn't turn around and start berating him in real life about where his finances came from.

When I was 20 five years ago I was earning £24 per hour as a contractor at a formula one team. No help from parents what so ever, in fact I grew up in a housing association house and dropped out of my A Levels.

Just because you didn't make these opportunities for yourself at a young age don't dismiss it as talking st!

OP: I always bought fast cars which weren't usually bought (and crashed) by younger people so the insurance was cheap. Anything bigger like a fast merc for example which takes your fancy?

As a middle aged man who earns crap money (rather than sit back and take disability from the state) working 50+ hours a week, I wish any youngsters every success. None of us knows what the future may hold and if life throws success your way good on you!

Bank of Mummy and Daddy. Ten grand for a 20 year old to spend on a car is actually quite a modest budget compared to some of the spoilt little rich kids out there!
I have never understood viewpoints like this, it comes across as bitter and jealous.

I bought a car last year that cost more than £10K, I was 21 at the time, and had no help from bank of mum or dad, simple hard work and saving. But, had I had help, which some of my friends with even nicer cars have had, what would it matter? I don’t begrudge them at all, and if I were in the same position, I wouldn’t be turning down the offer!

Going back to the original question: a MK6 Golf GTI or FN2 Civic Type R would be my suggestions. I had an EP3 Civic Type R at 19, it was insurable and I loved it. One of the most fun cars I have had the pleasure of owning.

If you were willing to compromise on your age limit, it would open up the possibility of a lot more fast and fun cars.
