As the titel states, I purchased a 2010 bmw and everything was fine when I checked it, test drove it etc. Now picked the car up drove fine for a day and today a red warning light came one stating "Engine oil pressure too low. Engine damage possible. Stop Engine. It is not possible to continue your journey"

Contacted the dealer I bought it from said to take it to their garage and they wlll look at it.They ran a text and it displayed a fault 30C1 DME: Engine-oil pressure control, static

They did not have a clue what it was so have arrange the car to be towed to another garage who will look at it tomorrow and now I'm left without a car and the dealer would not listen to the fact I needed a car for work etc, asked them to arrange a courtesy car, they just weren't interested, actually he got very aggressive and started raising his voice..

Now where do I stand legally in this situation? The fault sounds very serious (unless someone has more knowledge about it on here) Can I reject the car and get a refund? What if they fix and the problem occurs again as it only lasted me 1 day!

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

"I purchased a bmw"

There's your first problem.

Just burn it.

It could be just a sensor fault,at least give them a chance to fix it before getting rejection happy.

You bought a specific car, not the right to never be without a car, so I am not surprised your demand for a courtesy car was rejected.

If you had brought an approved used BMW, from a main dealer, you would probably get a courtesy car.

But you've brought a 7 year old one, presumably from an independent garage. I'm sure you are aware of the risks this entails, and the possibility that there's a good reason this car was sold by the previous owner.

Just give them the chance to fix it, you haven't really got another option.

Ultimately, you get what you pay for unfortunately. Not having a dig, it's just the way it is. You probably could have brought a newer kia from a main dealer for similar money and got a better experience, but then it'd be a kia.

I think it's good that you bought that to his attention.

Sounds like the buyer may have brought a pup....

There are plenty of people driving cars over seven years old without any issues the age isn't the problem it's the inconvenience, OP grin and bare for now, once you have the diagnosis see what solutions the dealer is offering & go from there either that or hire a car for a week.

Stupid question but I have to ask; Does the car have any oil in it?

Yes it has oil in it, was showing full. Car also had an oil service before I picked it up.

Anyone know what causes low oil temp? Car also has an intermittent coolant smell coming form inside dunno if that's related to the oil problem or not.

Would it be an N43 engine (e.g. 116i, 118i, 318i, 320i etc.) by any chance? This is a very common fault (another triumph of German engineering), but there doesn't seem to be a single cause. There is a solenoid valve on the side of the block that controls oil pressure that sometimes causes this, probably one of the simpler things to start with.

That's the first thing that I would have checked.

Just an update (if anyones interested lol)

The car was taken back to the garage who apparently fixed it, they replaced the oil pressure switch. The car ran for about 3 days (about 150miles) then today the same problem has arisen.

So now back to the garage again tomorrow. Really don't know what to do about this now.

Could be the pump...

If it is, I personally wouldn't want to keep the car. Engines need lubrication.

it does sound like an oil pump issue, I agree with the above I'd now start to be concerned low oil pressure is not good for an engine's longevity.

Thanks for the replies. Will discuss my options with the dealer tomorrow as the fault seems to be big.

Could I request a refund for this? Or exchange

You could go down that road or the dealer might offer you a three year comprehensive warranty which would help ease your concerns, see what the dealer has to say & take it from there.
