''The most British of British cars may no longer be a British car...
Markus Duesmann, the head of purchasing for BMW, made the announcement during the week that the company are "extremely concerned that the Brexit talks have been so piecemeal and slow so far."

The second largest manufacturer of luxury vehicles in the world, BMW produce the Rolls Royce models in their British plants, and combined with other vehicle models, result in £2.4 (€2.7) billion in exports each year.

However, Duesmann said in an interview (via Bloomberg) that: "We’re already revising the logistics channels for the U.K., so that we’ll be able to manage the coming border, whichever duties will be in place in the end."

This is due to Britain's exit from the EU, which will most likely result in tariffs and other trade barriers being imposed on its cars and parts, which in turn will hike up the manufacturing and exporting costs of the vehicles.

A direct response to this will be to move the car-making plants abroad - quite possibly Munich, where the BMW headquarters is based - which will then see the Rolls Royce cars manufactured entirely in Germany.''

Looking good huh?!!!

He obviously knows sweet FA about real supply chain logistics. He need to speak to some of our real JIT, MRP and Kanban experts here on PH.....

How they hell does he think this will go down with Merkel and the public in Germany? Bringing Rolls Royce to the fatherland? They'll absolutely hate that! They'll no doubt start calling the engines Merlins for added schadenfreude - sorry, glee!

You can almost imagine the brexiteers watching the factory / jigs being loaded onto the removal lorries, and setting off for the frictionless comfort of the Single Market / Customs Union as they shut down the UK factory.

"They're bluffing" / "They'll come crawling back you watch" they'll cry. "It's all part of the negotiations". "We predicted that". "We all knew they'd be a bit of pain". etc.

Smiler.

It seems not yet.

Any comment on the Rolls story, or just attacking the messenger today?

In that link I see some basic chat about supply chains, WTO tariffs/duties etc.....but nothing about the cars getting built in Germany?

The OP cut'n'paste quotes the BMW bloke but then the last 2 paragraphs are just journalistic dramatisation.

And lets just completely overlook the logistics of shifting the whole Goodwood operation to Germany

This

They are also not fools and they know, UK in the EU or not, that part of the allure of Rolls (and Bentley) is that they are British and British made. There will be more and more stories being spun in the press like that but until the day everything is signed, sealed and delivered and the factories start packing up its all guess work. The only fact we have about Brexit is that nobody knows the impact it will have.

That doesn't read to me like they're moving their manufacturing base.

Correct. The amount of bed wetting going on by a handful of people here is embarrassing.

It's on both sides to be honest with brexiteers going on about a land of milk and honey and remainers being all doom and gloom. Reality is, nobody knows, we voted to jump into the unknown and it will probably end up being somewhere between the two but we will be alright.

Now let's play this out for a second.

If RR did move to the EU wouldn't VW see an opportunity to capitalise on the fact it's U.K. Built unlike RR and thus take those sales away from RR.

Some hard-core remainers are so desperate to be proven right that one could imagine them prostrated at the feet of a leather-clad Junker squealing "punish us!"

Indeed. Like I said above part of the image of these two brands is their Britishness. I would argue the same with MINI too.

The oldest surviving aircraft engine factory in the world, in Oberursel near Frankfurt, is actually now a branch of Rolls-Royce.
