I need front and rear pads fitting to my 640d.

Does anyone have strong views on which brand would be an acceptable alternative to BMW?

Euro Car Parts sell Brembo, Pagid and Textar. They are all about the same price but for the fact that the Textar rear pads are about double the price of the others - the fronts are all similar.

GSF sell VeTech and "PREMIUM" - not very confidence inspiring.

A local BMW specialist suggested Brembo are prone to squeaking; that would have been my first choice going on the fact that I thought they were premium brand.

Brembo's do squeek. Textar is OEM, but the Euro ones are not the same grade. They do the job though.

Have also fitted Pagid, but they throw a lot of dust off.

I’ve gone for Pagids on my M135i and they seem good. Possibly have a bit more bite than the BMW ones.

I had Brembos on my old Audi S5 and didn’t think they were all that special

Pagid tend to squeak. Gen BMW ones work well but give loads of dust. ATE Ceramic work well with low dust.

The front and rear pads on my 640d are due within about a month.

Not sure I fancy the £650 bill for BMW to change them, it just seems crazy.

It wasn’t that long ago that I’d buy the discs & pads for previous cars and fit them myself for a few hundred pounds.

On the AUC & insured warranty side of things, BMW have been superb and they seem to go over and above what they’re obligated to do if you stick with them for maintenance and keep it “in the network”

If you want to stick with gen BMW parts look the part no up in realoem and pop it into Ebay. You’ll often find the pads and discs you need at much less than retail.

Always had Pagid fitted by my local indie - two 335ds and 7 years without any problems.

genuine BMW pads are ATE
I purchase genuine BMW parts from Cotswold BMW ‘but I guess the ATE pads from Euro car parts etc are the same

I'm not so sure Ate are the same from ECP, also that pad pic says Jurid too, the product number may differ on two branded pad sets too.

Textar are only OE for a specific pad on a specific car sometimes, for instance, a rear pad on an E60, but not the front, depending on model, and that came from Mr TMD friction when I met them. One pad in use on the brand allows them to say they're OE suppliers, that doesn't mean the whole range.

BMW are supplying pads to their dealers with close to 60% discount, and are expecting nationally to increase brake sales by 44% due to this massive re-pricing structure, of course the dealer may not want to play, but they're under pressure to move the parts whether through their own workshops or to the trade,

My recommendation to you all, is get yourselves directly into the agent and buy your own pads, discs, clips, sensors, paste, carrier bolts, disc bolts, and get your people to fit them if you want, preventing them from holding back on the price advantage they have too. I know Indy's on here won't like that, but the simple fact is rarely do they ever use main dealer parts, and you private owners frequently receive no option, or a fraction of the discount received. Sometimes people just receive advice from those they trust, which can be to take a deal from factors, which is not the right advice for everyone.

I can get hold of significant BMW discounts and have done, you need to ask about it, just mention the brake campaign ;-) If no-one will fit them for you because you supplied them I'll happily fit them for you on my driveway haha.
