Gents, I'm looking for a cheap second car to use for a rather rural commute (mostly mud-covered single track roads) and the occasional bit of A and B road miles. Will also be used as storage, something to abandon in pubs after a night out, remote car parks whilst I go trail running, the airport whilst I go on holiday.. that sort of thing.

Needs to be completely anonymous but also reasonably presentable. I'd like something as reliable and fuel-efficient as possible.

Originally looking for a 4x4, but that's probably overkill. I've done a search on Autotrader for cars up to £1.5k within a 15 mile radius of my house.

The following were the options that stood out as being the best of those available:

2005 Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec (First gen) - Quite like the look of this and they seem to have a good reputation as a decent steer.
1999 Peugeot 406 HDi saloon - For some reason I like these; I gather they're quite bomb-proof, economical and comfortable.
2003 Volvo V40 1.9D Sport Lux (Estate) - My Father has one of these as a daily and it's now on close to 300k with minimal work needed. Comfortable, fairly frugal and spacious.
2000 VW Golf 1.6 SE (Hatch) - I've always liked the Mk4 Golf. I drove one a few years ago and it was very solid. Pretty boring, but may suit the circumstance.
2005 Nissan X-Trail SVE 4x4 - The newest and 4x4. I'm not sure if the 2.2 DCi engine is likely to cause trouble (I think it's Renault-based?). Still, it's a 4x4 and quite big!
2006 Volvo S60 2.0T SE - I used to have an S60 in D5 form. I like these, a lot, but probably not best suited to the type of use I intend for this car.

Which of these would you go for?
OP if you're looking for a cheap runabout I know of a Toyota Avensis T4 with 48k on the clock, it's bumpers need some paint but it's cheap enough.

Obviously that's dependent on where you are in the UK.

I had a Golf 1.6 SE. fking hateful underpowered crap.
Also the door locks regularly fail - can cost £150 a time to have fixed. Somewhat dents the economics of a cheap banger that does.

I've a 2003 Subaru Forester (non turbo) for similar usage - 3 years on and pretty bomb proof

Can be left for months and will start and drive plus handy for the rough stuff though clearance could be better
