Personal experience.

I've had a range of Toyota Yaris' (Yaris's, Yarisi?),and all without exception have been bulletproof. 1 did need a £40 rad,but that was it. With mega miles (173k on a 1.0 engine), it was superb. The 1.3 is better but rarer, but all the engines are absolutely peachy.
I ran a 406 2.0 HDi from 50k miles to just under 300k with only a broken wire to the lift pump. It was remapped to a huge 130 bhp, and was superb. Very very good car. These are £300 on ebay now. These are excellent engines.
BMW 5 series was hard to keep on the road.
Renault Megane 2 I've had 3 of. They are a bit hit and miss, 1 was very good, 1 very bad,and 1 OK. Willing to take the risk? They are cheap and don't rust.> 2005 is better, as they had a redesigned fusebox that was more reliable (No water ingress).
Jeep - No chance.
Saab 9-3 has been reliable, but needed a lot of maintenance. Same as a Volvo V50 D5. Both nice cars, though I prefer the Saab.
Saab was £1300 on a 55 plate, with 70k miles.
So,my £1000 would go on a tidy Yaris.

Yaris isn’t a bad idea, if I can stretch a bit you can even pick up a tidy T Sport Yaris. May be an option!

My Mrs has a 1.3 2003 Auto Yaris. Last one with the TC Box.
I love driving it. Quite nippy.

She had a 2005 Manual 1.0 before that. Very dull and gutless in comparison.
Both had moving back Seats to adjust Boot/Passenger Space. 4 Adults in reasonable comfort.

Other than some corroded Brake Pipes, just the usual consumables/servicing on both.
Only does 3-4K/Year

Fiat Panda 100hp or a Suzuki Ignis Sport? If you're happy with superminis, both are meant to be great fun to chuck around and will be cheap to run (the former in particular - I think the latter can have some issues in finding parts cheaply).

Just checked, Fiat Panda 100hp start at nearer 1.8-2k and Ignis Sport 1.3-5k. So a little over budget I guess. I didn't realise they were expensive to run however?
