I'm quite tempted by this. The interior looks lovely and it's pretty fast. I'm a bit worried it will be a bit of a barge though; has anyone driven one?
I've had one almost a year. It's a big estate, just as I needed, but I certainly wouldn't classify it as a barge. The engine and box can be quite sprightly and I'm very pleased with the car overall.

Obviously, it's not an S4!!!

Thanks to Fast Bug again, although I pay quite a bit more than that deal, albeit with 15miles p.a.

Go try one - I was pleasantly surprised.

Me too.

The only problem I can foresee is manufacturers have to test every combination of specification possible. There must be tens of thousands of combinations on a something like a Golf. They have to test each and every option configuration so they know emissions.

I suspect that we will start to see a similar model to car sales in the USA where cars come in 2 or 3 specifications that can't be changed. It saves the manufacturer the hassle of testing all the different combinations.
I doubt it will be every single option. I think it will be those that are likely to affect fuel consumption/emissions
Roof Rails
Wheels
Air Conditioning
Anything that adds significant weight (spare wheel vs tyre inflation kit?).

They'll then have to work through the various possible permutations. The number of options makes it exponential.

Doubt it will include things like leather interior or LED/Xenon lights.

I think rather than limit type of options they will probably incorporate them into packages. So pay a few £0000s to get a number of options together.

What Car and Car Buyer both have articles on it. I've also seen it on various VW forums.

https://www.whatcar.com/advice/buying/wltp-rde/

WhatCar said:
Another change that’s coming this year that instead of just testing one version of each model, the WLTP tests must be carried out for every model variant. This is likely to result in less choice for consumers, both of different trim levels and of optional extras. We’ve heard of manufacturers removing roof rails and sunroofs from option lists so they don’t have to provide test figures for cars with those options fitted.
http://www.carbuyer.co.uk/news/159872/new-emissions-rules-will-change-how-options-are-sold

CarBuyer said:
Under WLTP, the individual options fitted to a car will factor into the test. Each and every option will be given a CO2 figure, largely influenced by its weight, aerodynamic penalty or the amount of power it draws from the engine. This will impact heavy items such as panoramic sunroofs and larger alloy wheel sizes in particular.

While it doesn’t spell the end of individual options as such, a model could have hundreds – or thousands – of different CO2 figures depending on the number, type and combinations of options chosen.
As I said, I think they'll start selling cars with standard packs to make it simpler.

These are the differences listed in the brochure:

19" wheels instead of 18"
Body-coloured top and matt black lower door mirrors with integrated indicators (think I like the Elegance's matt silver door mirrors better actually)
Chrome effect trapezoid dummy exhaust tailpipe surrounds, left and right
Rear tinted glass from B pillar backwards
‘R-Line’ styling pack – ‘R-Line’ design front bumper with unique ‘C’ signature ‘Gloss Black’ front air intakes and ‘Gloss Black’ rear tailgate spoiler
‘R-Line’ badging on front panels
Different three-spoke multifunction steering wheel with aluminium inserts and ‘R-Line’ logo.
Different seat upholstery ‘Nappa’ leather and ‘Carbon Optic’ side bolsters with contrast stitching (arguably the Elegance is better here, choice of leather colour and none of the naff Carbon Optic stuff, whatever that is made of, who knows)
Front seats with ‘R-Line’ logo on seat backrest
Different decorative inserts in dash and door panels
‘Titan Black’ rooflining (again, no tangible advantage here, arguably a lighter interior is better for a sense of space)
‘R-Line’ branding on door sill protectors

Overall I think the R-Line makes for a slightly more agressive look, which you may or may not like. But that's all it is...cosmetic.

So apart from the wheels and badges, it's not easily noticeable which one is which, from the outside.
Does the Elegence still have flat bottom steering wheel?

Yes, and no, they couldn't. You get to choose which dealer your car gets delivered to when ordering so they would need to beat the deal in order for it to be worth doing.

Bear in mind the quoted prices on the Vanarama website are for the car with solid paint, of which there are none left; I think metallic is an extra £17pm on a two year lease.

Does anyone have any actual experience of keeping a lease car past 3 years? I have a March 2016 420D GC which is currently on a rolling contract (initial 2 year deal).

If I keep the car 3 years (original plan) this works out at around £310/month which I was comfortable with. However I put down quite a large 1st month payment so ongoing payment is only £200/month.

Understand about needing to keep it maintained, MOT'd etc at my expense but as it will be out of warranty the risk is higher - has anyone any experience of this situation?

A few other things from the outside: apart from the wheels and badges, there's the tinted rear windows, slightly different front air intakes, small rear spoiler...

Different steering wheel but both are flat bottomed (although I'm not sure why? more knee room or is it a 'sporty' thing?)

See pages 7 and 9 of the brochure for the steering wheels: https://www.volkswagen.co.uk/assets/common/pdf/bro...

R-line one does look a little nicer I'd say.

OMG... for the steering wheel alone I would stick with the R Line... hehe
It makes the Elegance one look naff once you've sat behind of the R Line one

There are occasional stories on Money Saving Expert from people who took 4 year PCP and were unhappy when something big died out of warranty. You have to asses the risk yourself. You know the car, you can probably read forums to see if there's anything typical for that model to die after 3 years, etc.

Thanks, I live about 200m from a Mercedes dealer so I'll pop in and see if they have one.

Just get it with the "Muscat Atlantic Blue" wheels - they're a no-cost option, and I think they look pretty damned good with the blue highlights. Doesn't come with flat-bottom steering wheel though.

Added this to the Cupra leasing thread but might have some information useful for others:

Hi Chaps,

My current Cupra deal is 1+23 @ £249 and 10k per annum.

I've had my leasing extension quote through from VWFS based on an extension of 1 year.

I'm currently on 10k miles and the quotation is based on a maximum of 20k miles (so the same as the original 2 year term @ 10k miles per annum.)

So 10k miles to last me through until December next year so essentially 16.5 months. Hmmm...

Quote is £199.22 per month after my 2 year terms ceases during December this year.

Pros:

It's a great car
Prices comes down £50 a month
Not many other lease deals around where you could get a similar car for the money.

Cons:

1.5 year old car
Tyres, brakes and servicing will need to be done soon - Approximate cost around £500.
£60 admin fee to change the lease.

Anything else I'm not considering?

What do you guys think?

In terms of the deal back from Jonno's contacts, a new Cupra (would be a 290, not 300) they offered:
Cupra 290 (monsoon grey, nevada white or urban silver)
5 door
DSG
1 + 23 @ £295 (inc VAT)
8k miles per annum
Broker fee of £198
Lead time Oct/Nov

Thanks, C.

I've been looking at leasing for a while now, I am fed up with the frequent £100 - £150 bills my Insignia is throwing up, as it approaches 90,000 miles. Its almost a monthly occurrence now, so I figure, why not pay £200 or so a month and lease a new car. Is it me however, or are there far fewer really cheap deals around now?

I remember the Golf R deal when they came out, under £250 per month as I recall. Nothing like as cheap now.

Also, when I bought my Insignia, you could lease an Audi A4 1.4TSI for around £170 per month or an Octavia with the same engine.

I wondered what people's views are on this....has the time of the really cheap lease deal passed?

My dealer couldn’t come close. He seemed displeased as Santander is the normal provider of Volvo leases. But, it seems that the Santander guy does the order through a nominated dealer, so I’m ending up dealing with the same dealer anyway.

I've been looking at these for a friend - the best I could find on the same terms totalled £9395, so this is fractionally better. Where's it from?

I think you need to have a direct discussion with your leasing company.

I had a 4 year lease on a BMW F31 and one of the ECUs went on the fritz in year 4. I made it clear to both the servicing dealer and the leasing company that they could sort out the repair between them, as I didn't own the car. I paid for the maintenance package, which was the end of my responsibilities. In the end BMW UK and Hitachi split the cost between them.
